Hello everyone! =) Top 5 Sundays time is here once again! Awesome!
This definitely an interesting one to write, hope you enjoy it!
Let’s get right to it, shall we?
This week’s results:
Bookish Pet Peeves! = 13 (59%)
Favorite UF Covers! = 9 (40%)
The theme for today is:
Bookish Pet Peeves!
But first, a little bit about this feature and the rules to join in…
Every Sunday I will post a TOP 5 list on the blog. It can be about anything and every week I'll have a new theme {You can vote on next week’s theme on my left sidebar!} and I will ad the Mr.Linky bellow the post so you can do a list with the theme and add you link to it.
Rules:
-
Write a post listing your TOP 5 choices within the theme I chose (or was chosen on a poll) for the week.
-
Mention this Blog on the post and link back to it.
-
Fell free to use the Feature's image (there is a smaller size version of it bellow)
-
After you've finished your post, add you link (of the post, not your blog's main page) to the Mr.Linky at the end of that week's post.
-
If you don’t have a blog to post, just leave your list in the comments =)
This week’s theme is Bookish Pet Peeves!
Just to make something clear, I absolutely ADORE Urban Fantasy! None of these Pet Peeves would prevent me from enjoying a book or a series.
These elements can be quite awesome when well done, but they also get on my nerves when poorly constructed.
*in no particular order
The Perpetual Love Triangle
As an avid reader and sometimes romantic woman, I thoroughly enjoy romance with my Urban Fantasy, I also enjoy the tension between Heroine and Hero and a well written triangle will definitely keep me coming back for more.
However, a Love Triangle that goes through book after book after book, definitely gets on my last nerve!
The Leather Wardrobe
Yeah, yeah… For the regular UF heroine leather might be an extra layer of protection… blah blah blah…
But when it’s basically everything the character wears? I say there is such a thing as too much leather!
Misleading Covers/Blurbs
We have encountered these, haven’t we? I mean, Mercy doesn’t really have all of those tattoos and from what I could gather the main character in J.F. Lewis’ books is a Man.
I don’t know if I’m the only one that does this, but when I start a new book and out of the sudden they describe the heroine as blond and I am quite sure the woman I saw on the cover was a brunette, I stop reading and look at the cover to make sure I’m not going crazy.
I also tend to read blurbs on Goodreads for the books I’m going to start reading and a lot of the time the blurb can be quite misleading as to what I can expect from the character, story and the plot.
Would all that make me the enjoy the book less? Not at all, but it is definitely something that annoys me to no end =/
Info Repetition or Info Dumping
Of course it is important to give us, the readers, the characters backstories and the world building, but doing it all at once is not the way.
Also, I am not a fan when we have been given info on a backstory early on in a novel and then we keep getting the same info again and again, throughout the book.
The impression I get is that the author has forgotten what she/he has written in terms of backstory in the book and she/he adds it again. I have NO problem with that, I understand that authors couldn’t possibly remember everything the wrote.
However, a book is supposed to go through an editor, is it not?
Lust at First Sight
I feel that LUST and LOVE are two concepts that Urban Fantasy characters tend to confuse a lot.
You see these characters succumb to amazing attraction and chemistry and suddenly they are proclaiming eternal love? What Gives?
On the other hand I do have to say that a LOT of UF series have been able to write love stories quite well =)

Agree to all of them - especially love at first sight. Urgh! Such a cheap trick.
Great, peevish, list :)
@Danielle

Totally agree. Specially about the "Lust at first Sight" thing. That really, really, really bugs me.
Yes, yes, and yes to the covers and blurbs! Especially Mercy's books. I agree with the others too.
This was harder than I thought! Practically agreed with every single one of yours so I had to do some thinking!
@Tamara

@Jen
Thanks! Loving to know people feel the same way =D
@Jessica
I sooo know what you mean! I had to do some thinking as well =D
I despise misleading blurbs! Covers I can deal with. Oh and yes leather, you can't be a ninja in leather 'le sigh*
I do not like..well all those harlequins you know where the couple meet for one night, have sex and then 3 months later she shows up saying she is preggers and he says we have to get married! really...really? In this age? Why, you two do not even know each other
Awesome theme!
