Stop 14: How to Become a Vampire's Donor
By Jess Haines and E. Blix
Hello there! Jess Haines here. I'm the author of the H&W Investigations series--urban fantasy novels about Shiarra Waynest, a human private investigator in an alternate, present-day New York. Somehow she keeps getting pulled into supernatural troubles way above her pay grade…
Today my SILENT CRAVINGS co-author is here to help wrangle a few of our characters into talking about how the vampires from my world find people to sign up as contracted blood donors to feed their unholy thirst. Shiarra, the main character from the H&W Investigations series, is here with a few of her friends to discuss it. Take it away, guys!
________________
Royce: I beg your pardon? It's not unholy.
Thrane: Are you kidding? You and Mr. Fancypants drink the blood of the living to extend your hedonistic un-lives so you can keep drinking the blood of the living so you can keep living your he--
Clyde: Yes, yes, we get the point.
Shiarra: Anyone else a little bit creeped out right now? Show of hands.
Sara: Both hands.
Shiarra: Why are you raising your hand?
Thrane: Just because I'm a vampire doesn't mean it isn't inherently creepy. And when I do get a bite, I actually treat the donor like a human being, not a juice box.
Clyde: Oh, please. You and your pack of misfits barely do better than the occasional stray dog or cat, let alone a person.
Thrane: Hey, when I walk into a club I have to beat off the mob. Wait. Wait, I didn't mean that.
Shiarra: That's so many kinds of wrong.
Royce: I find, in general, those who approach me in public settings--clubs, restaurants, fundraisers, that sort of thing--tend not to be the caliber of person I want joining my numbers. Not as a donor or as future vampire material.
Clyde: Oh, I disagree. I think the ones who approach in public make excellent donors. They're always so eager to please.
Thrane: I don't like the way you smiled when you said that. Besides, they're still people.
Clyde: They're resources. Renewable resources.
Shiarra: Why did you send me to stay with this yahoo again?
Royce: I can't quite recall.
Sara: Well, looks like I'll be visiting Los Angeles again around the tenth of never.
Shiarra: Tell me about it.
Clyde: Ladies, I'm hardly referring to those of your caliber of intelligence and talent. Vampires must feed, and it is preferable if we take out our baser urges on those who won't be missed. Our hunger must be sated or we become… well. You see it sitting beside you.
Thrane: Whoa there, Satan.
Shiarra: So, Sara, how about moving to Alaska?
Sara: Let me get my things.
Thrane: Okay. Okay, you know what? This is exactly why I hate cretins like you. Leeches who not only drain people of their blood, you also suck the soul out of each and every person who comes into contact with you. Do you even feel anything anymore? Is there a single spark of--
Shiarra: Hey, hey, hey. You know, I'm usually the one to lose my head in these conversations. I don't think I can take this kind of competition.
Sara: Believe me, one of you is enough.
Royce: Much as I am loathe to admit it, he does have a point. There are those of us who have no care for the humans we contract beyond keeping them healthy enough to provide us with sustenance until something better comes along.
Clyde: I fail to see the problem here.
Thrane: I hope you fry in a sunbeam.
Clyde: Being jealous is no cause for hostility.
Thrane: I'll show you hostility!
Shiarra: Oh, Jesus, grab him!
Royce: Mr. Seabreeze, might I suggest you make your exit? Now.
Sara: Speaking of exits…
Shiarra: Yup, outta here.
Thrane: Let me go, damn it! I am going to tear off your pretty face!
Royce: I'll let you go once you calm down. Humans tend not to trust us when our eyes glow and we're flashing fangs.
Thrane: I could totally take him.
Royce: I'm sure.

Forsaken by the Others:
The Others-vampires, werewolves, things that go chomp in the night-don't just live in nightmares anymore. They've joined with the mortal world. And for private investigator Shiarra Waynest, that means mayhem…
Have a one night stand with a vampire, and you can end up paying for it for eternity. P.I. Shiarra Waynest, an expert on the Others, knows that better than most. Yet here she is, waking up beside charismatic vamp Alec Royce with an aching head…and neck. Luckily, Shia has the perfect excuse for getting out of town-namely, a couple of irate East Coast werewolf packs who'd like to turn her into a chew toy.
On Royce's suggestion, Shia temporarily relocates to Los Angeles. But something is rotten-literally-in the state of California, where local vampires are being attacked by zombies. Who could be powerful enough to control them-and reckless enough to target the immortal? Following the trail will lead Shia to a terrifying truth, and to an ancient enemy with a personal grudge…

The Goliath werewolves, a California pack hoping to expand into new territories, made an extreme error in judgment when choosing Christoph to be their representative for negotiations in New York. After two fights in the open with another supernatural, Christoph orders a lower-ranking teenaged Were to take the downfall for his mistakes by serving in his place under vampire Alec Royce’s watchful eye. When Christoph and another packmate try to save the girl from Royce’s clutches—never mind the inevitable war they’d start in the process—the two are outcast from their pack. The vampire once again demands servitude as recompense, and they soon find themselves magically “neutered” by enchanted leather fetish collars so they can’t hurt themselves or anyone else in the vampire’s entourage. Hey, the collars were all Royce had handy at the time.Just when Christoph thought it couldn’t get any worse, a mute vampire named Mouse decides to claim him, taking him for her own. She has her own set of problems, what with being mentally damaged by her sire, Max Carlyle, who delighted in enforcing her monstrous nature. She hungers for Christoph, but can’t stand to see someone victimized or—even worse—afraid of her.Christoph is taught the greater lesson of what it really means to follow the Goliath Code of Honor and Mouse narrowly avoids a nervous breakdown in the process of accepting her own predatory nature. The two must learn how to live together (and deal with his new accessory)—without driving Royce and the rest of his household crazy in the process.

I am a huge Paranormal Romance fan, so when Jess Haines told e she was writing a PNR story in the H&W Investigations, I was all for it.
Silent Cravings is a great treat for a fan of the H&W Investigations series. We get to know a lot of characters, that we had only seen in passing, much better. Not to mention the fact that we get a glimpse into Royce’s mind.
Even though I did enjoy the novel, I had a couple issues with it as well. Strictly speaking, Silent Cravings is not really a romance. I would even refrain to say it has romance elements, because it really doesn't.
I was actually really upset about that, because I was expecting much more in that department. Nothing smutty, mind you, but at least something.
Another issue I had was the constant switch in POV throughout the book. I’m not talking about changing every chapter or even every few pages, we get POV changes by the paragraph and it made me dizzy at times.
Despite that, I did enjoy peeking into different perspectives, I just wished it was more structured or maybe delegated to fewer characters.
Over all, Silent Cravings is enjoyable, especially for a H&W Investigations reader. I don’t know how much someone that has never read the series would enjoy it, though.

3 Star Rating Blog Hop - Authors' View! {Larissa Ione, Jess Haines, Terry Spear & Carolyn Crane}

*I'm having issues with the comment box on blogger, so I am sorry for not responding on the comments. I do read and appreciate ALL of them!
Hey guys! So, yesterday I got to express my point of View on 3 Star Rating Reviews and now I have some of my favorite authors to share their opinions on the matter as well.
Ladies, thank you SO much for taking the time to give me your opinions, YOU ROCK!
Ladies, thank you SO much for taking the time to give me your opinions, YOU ROCK!

"I see a three-star review as being something like a C or C- grade in school. Sort of a meh/average. I think any student would prefer an A or a B (and any writer would prefer a 4 or 5 star review!) However, 3-star reviews (and 1-star and 2- star reviews) are important, because they make the four-star and five-star reviews mean something."
Carolyn Crane,Author of The Disillusionists Series.
"A 3-star rating, to me, is a book that was somewhere in between--not great, but not bad, either. Or there were parts of it that were so good and parts that were so bad that I couldn't make up my mind whether I loved or hated it. I may or may not give it a reread in the future. As with any other book, it's just my opinion. Others may feel differently."
Jess Haines, author of the H&W Investigations.
"It's like being in school. 5=A, 4=B, 3=C, 2=D, and 1=F A three-star rating is supposed to mean average, but it comes down to making a C in class. I hated making C's in school and felt I was a failure. And in the military, we received officer evaluation reports that had a rating too. Average meant you didn't get promoted and eventually you were kicked out of the service. So to me average really has a negative connotation. I try not to think of it that way with reviews...but sometimes the negativity just seeps in."
Terry Spear, A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing, USA Today Bestseller.

"Ooh, 3 star reviews, huh? Well...they don't thrill me, but I don't HATE them the way some authors do. I have a lot of friends who say they'd rather have a 1-star review than a 3-star one, because that means that at least the book evoked a passionate response, even if that response is hate. They think a 3-star review always means "meh." But I don't share that view. Yes, 3 stars might mean "meh," or it might mean that the reviewer loved some aspects and hated others...so the book evoked those passionate responses, even with only 3 stars. 3 stars also means that the reviewer might try another of my books down the road, where they are probably a lot less likely to try again if they'd hated the first book enough to give it 1 star. I know that if I give a 1-star review, I hated the book so much that I'll likely not read the author again. But I'll give the author another shot if the book was a 3-star one."
Larissa Ione, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Lords of Deliverence Series.
