A DEADLY HIGH
Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.
As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

*NO SPOILERS
Stacia kane is a wizard with words. She has been able to turn a unrepentant drug addict into a likable heroine that you can't help but root for. Of course, you do want to jump into the book and kill her from time to time, but after Chess gets into your heart, you are done for.
I have to say though, that a lot of that likability is on the hero’s shoulders. I mean, what would the Downside Series be without Terrible? I don’t know, but it would definitely be much less enjoyable.
Terrible is as fantastic and reliable as ever. Sacrificial Magic was a wild ride, but I LOVED Chasing Magic even more. It is hard to love Chess sometimes, but I absolutely adore the interactions between her and Terrible, not to mention that you can’t help but keep rooting for these two kids to find happiness together.
Even though Chess can get on my nerves sometimes, the glimpses we get from her past, makes me want to join her in her drug induced numbness.
Regardless, Chess and Terrible have become one of my favorite couples and Chasing Magic is another emotional roller coaster that you don’t want to get out of.
Besides the romance, Chasing Magic is full of nail botting and intriguing action that will not let you stop reading for a second. I love how Stacia Kane is able to balance both sides of the series and deliver not only an action-packed novel, but a heart wrenching one as well.
Sacrificial Magic is my favorite Downside book so far and I hope there is more Chess and Terrible’s adventures to come, because I cannot get enough of it!
