Holidays: Let the mayhem begin.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, so there's no denying it anymore - the holiday season is upon us. As a child, the holiday period of Thanksgiving through New Years Day was a time of glee for me because it meant lots of yummy food, presents, days off school, and playing with relatives I didn't get to see all the time.

Ahem. And then I grew up and realized all the time, planning, stress, money, and hassle it took to give me, my sisters, cousins, second cousins, etc., those gleeful memories. That was the true gift we received. I can count on one hand specific presents I remember getting during the holidays as a child, but if you ask me to recount stories of the time spent with my family/extended family, I could go on for hours. Some of those stories we'd laugh at now, but they weren't so funny at the time. Still, it's their craziness that makes them the most memorable. This is probably why some of my favorite holiday movies are zany, dark comedies like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, The Ref, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. What didn't go wrong with those families during those fictional accounts, right? But by the end, ties were strengthened and/or new friendships made. Sometimes, the most heartwarming moments are preceded by darkness tinged with hysteria-laden laughter.

Because holidays usually have an emotional impact on people - and can magnify current stresses to a fever pitch - I've used them in some of my books. At Grave's End has a pivotal scene on Christmas Day and climaxes on New Year's Eve. One Grave at a Time has a plot thread centered around Halloween. In my latest story in The BiteMagic Graves: One for the Money / A Questionable Client Before Christmas anthology, all my heroine Cat wants to do is have a normal holiday at home with her husband and friends. Instead, due to a slew of circumstances, she's forced to spend Thanksgiving in a strip club with her frenemy, Ian, while trying to save Bones and the others from a supernatural baddie who's got them in a deadly thrall. After all, holiday mayhem shouldn't be limited to only "real" people, right? *wink* Even fictional characters are due for some of that seasonal madness.

What are your plans this holiday season? And in the past, has everything ever gone as smoothly as you intended it? Everyone who comments will be eligible to win a signed copy of The Bite Before Christmas, co-authored by Lynsay Sands and me. International entries are welcome. Thanks so much, and happy holidays, everyone!

Right now I don't have any plans yet :( but on the 28 of December I'm gonna go lose my wisdom teeth *sniff* I hope one of my cousins throw a Christmas party ;) they are great at hosting parties!

Our plans are sweet and simple. With our families all too far away, my hubby and I spend the holidays with our 5 canine kids. Big meals with the 7 of us are much simpler. There isn't the stress of running from one home to another or the drama that goes with family get togethers.
We will have a Lord of the Rings movie marathon followed by a Harry Potter marathon while we are off from school (we're both college students at the age of 40+).

Last Christmas we had planned on having family over, then ended up delivering my twins a week before Christmas and spent Christmas and New Years in the NICU. So this year we will actually be able to be with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, a great time to give thanks for everything we are blessed with.

I love your holiday threads in your books. One Grave at a Time worked just perfect during Halloween. And I love the Christmas scene in At Grave's End, ah thinking of your books makes me want to go reread them!

  6. Cannot wait for this book to come out! Will def be buying it if I don't win it. A book by Jeanine and Lynsay?!?! Oh yes! Plans for Christmas include no work and lots of family time! It's always a great time with all of us together and the hilarious yearly arguments during the opening of gifts, usually about how annoying it is the have 4 dogs and a cat milling about! But, that's part of the fun, right?!:-)

  7. This holiday season will be spent pretty much the same way they always are. I'll do a little celebrating at work with a holiday party and a gift exchange, then I'll exchange a gift or two with my son and his girlfriend just before Christmas and they'll spend the holiday at her parent's house while I enjoy some good books on my own. I had thought when my son returned home from living out of state that I wouldn't have to spend holidays alone, but it sure goes to show that anything we plan or think we know, doesn't usually turn out that way.

    Great post Jeaniene.
In Canada we have Thanksgiving in October,so I don't have the stress of that this week.As for Christmas. It all starts for me Dec 1.The gift buying the meal planning.Myself, my siblings and their families we all go to my parents place for the day.I don't think a year has gone by where something didn't go wrong. Someone sick, pies not cooked right, oven breaking,etc..But some of the stories we get out of it are priceless.I love Christmas :)

Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Holidays!!

Loved the post! I have to say that I love your series and so far for me, all best laid plans are laid to rest. Nothing seems to work out even slightly as I would like, especially for the holidays. Somehow I will take my tiny townhouse and fill it with hordes of kids and a never ending bakeoff.

I'll be visiting my stepdad this Thanksgiving as I do pretty much every year. I don't want him to be alone for the holiday. If it's just the two of us, we usually join a potluck dinner. He likes to cook, but he always makes enough for 10 people and that's a bit much when it's just the two of us. Happy holidays everyone!

This is the first year in a long time that we are not going to go to my step familys for Thanksgiving. Its just going to be my mom, step dad, sister, and myself...so that makes it not so crazy. Hopefully everything goes good this year. The food is never done on time all the other years.

Thanks for the giveaway. This looks like a great book. Can't wait to read it.

This holiday, we are cutting back. It will just me and my son. My family only talks to me at this time of the year so I will buy them something. Not this year. I have decided that I am just going to enjoy the holiday, and do what I want. It should be a time to reflect and enjoy, not be stressed out.

  16. Since we´ve lost five familymembers over the last five years, and all around nov-dec, we´ve just lost all christmas feelings. Nowadays we just meet and eat, and if it wasn´t for my five yo SIL´s daughter, i think we would have stop with presents, too. It might change when/if i get children of my own, who knows.

    best wishes, Linda

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving (being British) but I'll be spending this Christmas visiting family & friends which is always nice.

As a child our holidays rarely went to plan, my Step-Dad was a fireman (now retired) so was always disappearing at awkward moments to go on a fire call. He often ended up having to eat his Christmas dinner in a sandwich as he ran up the road for another emergency!

    Happy holidays everyone :o)

I am sure something will go wrong..Last year i had the brilliant idea to decorate cookies with the kids..yea..turns out really young kids like to toss globs of icing....huge mess!

  30. My plans for the Holiday is to have christmas dinner with family and see my family from Australia. Playing in the snow and opening presents. then getting really drunk and new years eve with friends.

  31. I love the holidays. This is my third year to host Thanksgiving at my house. I love to do it. We have a big to-do. Mostly it is my husbands family and some of my family. And now we have added some friends to it. We have lunch and dinner and you can eat anytime. Always tons of food. After Thanksgiving is done on the weekend we put up the Christmas tree. My husband puts up the tree and my daughter and I decorate. We are very particular where the ornaments go. They have to match. For Christmas we have it the same place that my family has gone for 37 years. This will be #37 and so excited. I have a large family,(my mom has 10 brothers/sisters)lots of cousins and their kids. It is a big potluck and is so much fun. Will have food and then everyone chats and some of us play cards, like poker or Euchre(my fav) and just be together. About 100+ show up.

  34. This was a terrific interview! My plans for the holiday are to sit back and relax because my kids are finally old enough to handle cooking the turkey, et al, so I'm going to watch football and supervise! (Yeah, this is probably going to be the year that things don't go smoothly at all!!) Thanks for the awesome giveaway! I love Christmas books:)

  37. Oh, the holidays! Like you, Jeaniene, I used to start looking forward to the holidays as soon as summer was over but now, when Halloween hits so does the anxiety. It's everything, not enough time, my elderly parents, trying to please everyone and be in 3 different places at the same time. arrrgh! Not to mention all the cooking and then there's always someone who says, 'where's the ???' [getting heart palpatations thinking about it]
My plans, I'm going to my folks with 3/4 of the food while my hubby goes to his mother's since it's her birthday the same day and she doesn't like me, sooooooo!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone, in spite of it all. : )

  42. My plans for thanksgiving are actually simple this year. I'm going to my mom's house, which is in the same town and the same state. I have had to go to several places in the one day trying to see both sides of my family and my boyfriend's family. Luckily this year, I'm only going one place. Awesome post. This year will be a bit weird. First one without my mother in law (she died Oct. 24th, 2011 from cancer). So, we'll rally around my FIL to help him through it. Christmas- spend some time with my real dad and his side of the family, then come home and spend Christmas day with my mom and step dad and brothers. Then, we are planning on going to S.Carolina, to spend some time with my step dad`s side of the family, and I hope I get to see snow!!

    Such a great interview!

Plans... haha. We have way too many of them. Thanksgiving is usually a disaster in my house. Way too man chefs, not enough kitchen space. xD; Hopefully this year it goes off without a hinge.. although, I'm looking forward to watching my Mom get all frustrated and yelly at the turkey, because "it doesn't want to carve right".

Christmas? We finally have the funds to go all out. I'm a HUGE money spender when it comes to gifting them, and they deserve it one hundred percent. But.. I'm looking forward to the tree decorating, because thats a HILARIOUS adventure here in my house, as well as the making of the gingerbread village of DOOM! Gyah, I wish I had enough room to type up all of our families antics. We're not dysfunctional, I SWEAR!

Happy Holidays, to all of you! <3

Oh man, I know what you mean about forgetting presents, but remembering events. I can look at old holiday photos and be transported instantly to that moment -- like the one year we took a multigenerational family portrait, from my great-grandmother down to me. If you look at the photo, it was inevitable that I get glasses -- everyone in my family was wearing them, LOL.

More recently, I remember the Thanksgiving when the electric went out mid-dinner prep! OMG, what a nightmare! At least the oven/stove were gas, so I could still cook, but cooking by candlelight isn't easy!

Hope your holidays are more adventure than mis-adventure!

Thanks Jeaniene for introducing me to Larissa's Bookish Life webpage! Jeaniene is one of my favorite authors and this webpage is great tool to introduce me different titles and authors that may be comparable to my reading tastes.

Presently, books are keeping me from going crazy as I am recovering from what my doctor called "the crudes", My husband is two counties away at Children's hospital taking care of our miracle girl while she battles pnemonia. I miss the sounds, our house is too quite. I even miss the sounds of gunfire from our teenager storming into battle on Call of Duty MW3!

Even the mouthwatering smells of the holiday is missing, the only thing I have made for Thanksgiving was the order selection at a nearby Cracker Barrel! As Thursday quickly approaches I trust my antibotics will have worked their magic so I will not look like a crackhead, nor sound like a coughing chainsmoker. I plan on picking up those tin pans of yummy "homemade" goodness and sharing it with my family, even if it is in a hospital room.

No matter what situation each of us have, there are things to be grateful for. Me, I am blessed, we have the world's best peditrician, an excellent Children's hosptial nearby, a strong willed beautiful daughter, a healthy son, a wonderful husband, loving family, a roof over our heads and clothes in our closets.

I wish everyone a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving, textbook normal or not.

Isn’t half the fun that nothing ever goes as planned? Last year I managed to burn my arm with mashed potatoes and then I had all that turkey gravy for nothing. The year before that I ran out of food and learned that the only time Marie Callendar says “portion size” and means it is when they are overcharging for a box on Thanksgiving. But the best holiday memories are from when I was a kid. One Christmas my school was standing up doing a pageant for our parents. Half-way through Silent Night we heard snickers and whispering. That escalated to a small chuckle which then grew to a dull roar. I was standing there looking around because nothing was supposed to be funny but didn’t see anything. When we got home our mother quickly pulled out the tape for all of us to watch.

Sitting on the church steps was my little brother, Jonathan. He was in Kindergarten so he was right in front in the center of the group. At first there was nothing but he quickly got bored and started looking all around the room. Then I guess he figured he’d be there awhile so he ought to get comfy because he took off his shoes. You could hear the whispers and giggles in the audience around my mother. He then decided to put his shoes on his lap, stared at them for a bit as it trying to decide what to do next and figured the best course of action would be to hang them off his ears, of course. So there he was, bobbing his head like Ray Charles in his glasses that gave him huge bug eyes with shoes hanging from either side of his head. I think I laughed so hard I peed myself.

  62. Josette says:

Holidays have always involved me and my immediate family traveling to someone else's house and that hasn't changed for me as an adult. Ever since my husband and I got married we've been traveling to his parents for "dinner" at 11AM and my parents for "supper" in the later afternoon. We do this for all of the major food eating holidays. Talk about calorie counting having to be put on hold! sigh. So, it's always rush rush rush and eat eat eat. Not to mention the few times that emotions were high due to other things happening in our lives. Depressed individuals wearing PJs to dinner and fights between the sister-in-laws... yeah... holiday family fun!

Thank you for taking the time to share with us today and for the lovely giveaway opportunity. For many years I have had high expectations for the holidays. I wanted them to be perfect and worked myself to exhaustion trying to bring this about. However, there always was a sense of disappointment in the end. I have since learned to just be happy with my family and just do the best I can and it is infinitely much more satisfying a holiday :)

  73. This Thanksgiving I will be cooking for my Hubby, boys and my in-laws... Christmas is a bigger thing, we will have christmas morning with just Hubby, our boys and myself, then drive to my parents house, open more presents, then load the car with more and head to my grandparents house. Then after spending alot of time there we head over to my in-laws... We always end up leaving something out, trying to visit everyone, so most of the time we end up at my aunt Nan's house christmas eve day. lol so much to do, and so little time! =D

  74. Just my family and my inlaws this year, very simple and easy...I hope! They are coming to my house for a change. I am hoping that will make it easier on my girls than having to travel all over the place!

I remember one Thanksgiving where my family and I traveled to Atlanta, GA to meet my grandparents and celebrate the holiday. We had all sorts of sight-seeing planned, but after the first day, I developed a fever and felt like death warmed over. My family, being as kind and loving as they are, left me in the hotel room by myself while they went and toured the city. I was not a happy camper.
But this Thanksgiving will be much better, I'm sure! Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Turkey Day to everyone!

I always cook for both the big holidays. My husbands family comes for Thanksgiving, and my family for Christmas. It's nice having all those leftovers, I don't have to cook for days!! And I do have a story to tell, many many years ago we were setting up the tree, and for some reason, it kept tilting or listing to the side, I don't exactly remember, (it was a fake one) and my husband picked it up and threw it across the room. That seems bad, but really it was funny. We laughed our asses off, and then got the duct tape out and fixed the top piece that attaches to the tree. It didn't list any more, and for many years we got a laugh out of it when we got the tree out and saw the duct tape still there. Now we use real trees, but we still talk about old faithful! I love these writers, thanks for the giveaway!!

Ok so this year I am holding Thanksgiving. Lets hope I don't burn the turkey lol...... As for precipice holidays let's just day "cast" yeah that's about right, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Just thinking of some of the things that have taken place on our holidays make smile. Let me explain a little I have four brothers and no sisters and to top it all of I'm the baby by six years. Let's just say I had no dating life for quite a long time lol..... We have been through everything together laughs and cries and I wouldn't have it any other way. Two years ago we lost our father he was our best friend to all of us. Whenever the holidays come it's even harder he always loved them. Since then we have come even closer,we each a little of him in all of us and it is a comfort. So in closing we have a crazy family never know what's gonna happen

Being Canadian, I have already celebrated Thanksgiving, it was a lovely dinner shared with family. The past two years I have hosted Christmas dinner at my house, both went rather well...except for the year my in-laws decided they wanted red wine (we are not wine drinkers) and FORGOT to bring the bottle opener. Well, a screw-driver, a screw and a hammer later my ceiling was covered in red wine!!! You can still see the stain today! O_o

  84. Oh my, there are lots of stories I could tell, but since it is Thanksgiving the one that comes to mind in our huge-i-normous Turkey incident.
Our family all meet at grandma's for Thanksgiving dinner and each pitch in to bring some of the food. Uncle Jack and his family never bring any food, but come to eat anyway. This one year he surprised us by volunteering to bring the turkey.
He brought the turkey the night before so that grandma could cook it as Aunt Laura would not.
The bird was so huge that it would not fit into the oven until we removed all the racks and set it on a pan in the bottom.
It took two of us to maneuver it in and I learned some new colorful vocabulary from grandma while we tended to the beastly thing.

    Hi Jeaniene,

I usually spend Christmas & Thanksgiving at my parents house. Now that they have moved down here to NC. This will be my first year without spending Christmas without my son.
He's 23 and he's in love and he is going to be spending Christmas with his girlfriend & her children. It's hard for me to let go for he's my only child. I feel he's going to get married on me next year.
So I'm trying to prepare myself for this. Not every Christmas has gone well for me in 2001 we had a house fire that totally destroyed my house in Oct. that year. I lost all my pets who were family and so with no content insurance we had to start over with the bare minimal.

Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas Jeannie. May you and your Hubby (M) have a blessed one with your little baby. I hope she likes her new home.

  100. Hardly anything goes as smoothly as planned in my family...my favorite was the year that my Grandfather had to make an ER visit late on the night before Thanksgiving (he was fine after some medication adjustments). We were so tired the next day that we had turkey sandwiches and having the real meal on Saturday. :)

  101. Jen says:

Thanksgiving used to mean a quiet evening with my hubby, sipping wine, and joining family or friends at our leisure for dinner. But once we lost our "fear of children" and decided to start a family 4 years ago, Thanksgiving now consists of field trips across the city to families' homes. We have discovered that these mandatory adventures are required because everyone wants to see the kids, and if we don't comply we could very well be disowned.
This holiday is no longer relaxing, but rather loud and dramatic. Nosy elders, disputes over domino games, political arguments.
The upside to this madness, however, is the best of both worlds. Our Cuban family provides delicious turkey with all the classic American "fixins", plus yuca, black beans, rice, and fried plantains. Even though I anticipate the usual craziness, I will unarguably have a tasty holiday.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Jeaniene, thank you for your books. Bones and Cat have become a part of my daily life, and I love the holiday themed adventures. Thank you for making my life happier with your beautiful world.

    Hi Jeannie

I love thanksgiving as well for me it has always been my favorite time of the year here in New England, cool crisp weather, last of the colorful leaves falling off the trees, childhood memories filled with family get togethers. While our family is considerably smaller now as they have moved away and passed on it remains one of my most favorite. Not all memories are sweet LOL just last year walking my dogs before lunch they decided to join in the Holiday spirit and roll in you guessed it Turkey poop! That was a memorable one for sure.....

  105. Jeaniene I love holidays as well. Since I live in WY, my daughter lives in MI, and my son lives in NH we were planning on both of them coming to WY as Dec also has my 25th wedding anniversary this year. Boy was that a mistake!! My son decided that driving that far was too hard on his two little boys and his wife refuses to fly so he wasn't going to be able to come. Then my daughter's husband and son decided it would be more fun if they all came out for the deer hunting season instead. Then their oldest daughter got a new job the week before they were supposed to leave, they can't leave her home alone, and so my daughter and other granddaughter wouldn't be able to come. I swear I'm never going to try and get both of my kids home for a holiday at the same time!!

I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving though and hope that your holiday plans go much better than mine did.

  106. Well I am in Canada so Thanksgiving for us was last month. My sister, mom and I make it. We make lists of who will do what and when. And it usually pans out well. Expect for one year. We thought we would do cabbage rolls. But no one had time to do them that day or the day before so we thought we would do them 3 days before freeze them bring them out and cook them the day of.

Well we had a new deep freezer and let me tell you we were all eating the turkey and the trimmings the poor cabbage rolls were still frozen after 3 hrs in the oven. Its an experience we can all laugh at now but we were all pretty up set at the dang things for not defrosting or cooking like we had planned. Now we stick to what works best Turkey, Ham and the fix's.

We won't go in to the sweet potato disaster of 09. My poor poor oven was covered in marshmallow goo for far to long.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

This holidays marks the beginning of a new journey to me, because i just finished high school and am just about to head off to university. I plan work as much as i can to save up money for a europe trip that will happen as soon as i can manage :) Indeed 2 months of holidays seem like a long time and i have a habit of not doing anything, thinking there would be time later on to do it, but what ive learnt is that time flies and the end of the holidays always comes faster than i thought it would so fill every single day with as much activity as you can before its all over.

  137. As Turkey Day is already over, I went to a friend's house for dinner and had a great time. I ate TONS of turkey along with brandied sweet potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, cranberries, and best yet, a rice-based stuffing that's served in pumpkins! I only wish the company I was with respected the romance genre and could have discussed them with me.

And, which is my favourite, reading lots of christmas- and other books with mommy. Aside from organizing/enjoying this big and hopefully smoothly going event, my wish is for some personal comfort time to spend reading some of my own books and eating too much cookies :)

I loved the interview! I am huge fan of Cat & Bones.
Our Christmas is spent with lots of family and it never goes smoothly but I have learned to ride it out.

It took a few years, but my husband and I finally have a Christmas schedule that everyone in our family is happy with. We fit everyone in and for three days straight we're either visiting, sleeping or driving.

For this year, my plans are to spend Christmas at home with my 3 children and a friend who is stationed nearby at a local air force base. She's not able to leave to go home to her family until after Dec. 25th, so I asked her to stay with us. It will be great, I'm sure :)
I don't think I've ever had a holiday to come off without a hitch..some dish is burned, some batteries are forgotten and every gas station is sold out of AA's, I find a small gift a week after the fact I had hidden from myself and forgot to wrap, or the electricity goes out. But it's the memory of the time spent together that's the most important!

Last Thanksgiving was a nightmare spent sitting with my sister in my parents driveway while she cried. Her grown kids sat at the dinner table and rolled their eyes.

This year was much better. No drama. Of course I also spend the entire day glued to "At Grave's End on my kindle... so if something bad did happen I doubt I would have noticed ;-)

  148. I hope the holidays this year will be better than the next one. It's always a sad time of the year since the family never gets together...
