ABOUT THE NORTH –Part Two
Hi again! Wow, the blog we’re visiting is in Brazil, and I’m going to be talking about the north. Like in the far far far north this time. Get ready for a loooooong trip!
The Takhini Wolves and Granite Lake are set in the north, and I thought it would be cool (heheh) to talk about exactly how remote this area is. The northern parts of Canada, US, Greenland, Russia, Scandinavia are BIG. As in really BIG. I think this is made more apparent by how isolated and empty a lot of the space really is. People do live there, though, and animals. And there’s a lot of resources such as oil, and even fresh water that makes these parts of the world not only great places for stories, but important to the
world.
I think shifters would love to live some of these places. Think about it—far enough away from civilization they could be more open about their dual natures, and yet with the resources to proved an income so their human sides could enjoy a living as well. The best of both worlds, and one of the reasons I set my Granite Lake and Takhini series in the far
north.
In BLACK GOLD, the heroine Gem is coming from a bit of an isolated background as well, only she’s used to living in the middle of a far more populated area. There’s a good reason for her to be sheltered, but coming to the north is a hug adventure for her. Just imagine. When you’re out hiking in some parts of the Yukon, you could literally walk for
days without seeing another person.
One thing that is interesting is that in spite of the remote location, there are people who for one reason or another live far away from everyone else. During the 1950’s a series of small radar stations were set up right along the extreme northern edge of Alaska and the Yukon. It was called the Distant Early Warning Line, or DEW Line. This was in the era of political tension between the then USSR and the United States, and the line was meant to be an eyes and ears to warn if any kind of hostile move was made by going over the arctic cap.
Talk about isolated. The northern edge of the world. Some stations were manned for years before being abandoned or converted into scientific research bases. The extreme weather conditions these stations face means there’s not a lot left of many of them now, over 50 years later.
You want to take a holiday somewhere very very quiet? How about this beautiful spot right on the artic Ocean on Nuvagapak Point?

No i don't think i would want to visit
audie@wickerness.com
I wouldn't want to visit either lol. I like being by myself a bit (very happy when partner goes away for a weekend lol) but that would be a bit much. Though in saying that if I had the right supplies and an internet connection along with my dog I could cope for a couple of weeks.
I wouldn't mind staying there if I had a good book, hot water and instant coffee.
Oh I would be there in a heart beat!! I love the winter (live in MN and love it sept through may) and I adore Siberian Huskies (as my profile picture indicates) especially my big fur ball. What better place to be than way north in the crisp air, some sled dogs, and wolves....with secrets. Sounds perfect to me!
Can't wait to find this book! Hope it does very well for you!

No, that's rather remote for me!

Great post and I wouldn't really want to visit such an isolated place.
lilazncutie1215[at]yahoo[dot]com
No, I couldn't do it. Although solitude has it's good qualities I need to know there are people and stores around if I need them :) And the cold I couldn't deal with at all because of the havoc it would be on my back.God bless anyone who could stay isolated like that.

Thanks for the contest/giveaway!

I'm the type of gal who doesn't judge a book by it's cover. I need to take a look inside, then I'll make final decision. You never know there might be a 5 star style spa lodge hidden in that not-so-nice exterior. :) Thanks for the giveaway!
jcross719(AT)yahoo(DOT)com
Not for me either. It's just me and the pups at home and I don't need anymore alone time than that.
Peace and serenity sounds wonderful-though I would want to bring my doggie too! Thank you for the awesome post. edysicecreamlover18@gmailDOTcom
I would check it out got s day or two. I would need some "creature" comforts, though, like books and cheap wine.
Thanks,

It might be worth a visit if I can just sit around and do nothing but read!
b(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com
Some good books hot chocolate a warm fire and I am there :)
flanagan@mebtel.net
I don't do cold very well, so no. Doesn't mean that I don't want to visit Alaska someday. Of course, I will have to invest in freezing weather gear in order to not lose my extremities. :D
It doesn't look much different from where I am now:)) But I guess there is no internet, so no, thanks:)
spamscape [at] gmail [dot] com
Great post! I would go there for a visit. All I would need is a few supplies. I could use a holiday somewhere that is very quiet right now.
beckyqward@gmail.com
I wouldn't mind a visit, especially if I could haul my TBR with me ;) But I'm not sure I could move there permanently! Probably not quite my thing ;)
f dot chen at comcast dot net
Too isolated and cold for me, especially if I had to stay there alone.

That's WAY too cold for me! I've got old bones, that need warmth :)

I would pass on the offer to visit, but thanks. lisagk(at)yahoo(dot)com
I litte bit too remote for me, not to mention that it would be too cold for my tastes too. I guess I will just stay where I am, and hope for the money and freedom to explore later, just nothing this remote.

I think it'd be cool to visit and camp out there as long as I have some strong and warm gear and lots of comfort snacks like smores lol. But that trailer looks grungy so that's why I'd wanna try a tent first. Of course once nightfall hits with cold wind I'd probably sing a different tune:P
bellsDOTfrancoATgmailDOTcom
I would have to pass visiting THAT particular place-- but if it was a a cozy cabin I'd be game. LOL

Hey Vivian. It was great to meet you in person in NY hope you enjoyed touring the US and no I don't think I would visit the remote spot. There are too many movies about monster that get thawed out and eat everyone, I don't think I could last even 5 minutes.
