When did you first start writing?
I’ve always written stories, ever since I was a kid, mostly for my own amusement. But I only started writing romance with a serious view to publication about seven years ago, when my daughter was a baby. I used to write whenever she slept :)
Have you always enjoyed Fantasy?
Yes, I think so – fantasy of all kinds, from sword and sorcery to paranormal romance. Discovering the romance genre of today was a bit of an eye-opener for me, when I found it encompassed all the other genres I liked to read – and write!
Why writing Urban Fantasy?
I don’t think I chose to write urban fantasy as such. Most of my stories tend to hop about between genres. In general, I just think of a story and other people tell me what genre it is J. With the Awakened by Blood books, it’s a moot point whether they’re regarded as urban fantasy or paranormal romance, because there are elements of each. I’m intrigued by the longer-running romance idea of urban fantasy, rather than the instant Happy Ever After of romance; and I do like the atmospheric, shadowy, city settings where weird and wonderful creatures lurk beneath the surface of normal urban life. And the opportunity of developing a kick-ass heroine, of course! Elizabeth, of the Awakened by Blood books is growing into the kick-ass part of her nature which lay dormant until she fell into the world of vampires.
Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?
Oh lots and lots, to greater or lesser degrees! Georgette Heyer; Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier; many of the “Dracula” films, especially the versions with Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Gary Oldman; Dorothy Dunnett; Tanith Lee; Mary Sewart; Bram Stoker; Anne Rice; Victoria Holt; Edgar Allan Poe; The Princess Bride; Harvey; The Scarlet Pimpernel; The Count of Monte Cristo; The Black Castle by Leslie Daniels; many contemporary authors, too numerous to mention; an old film whose name I just can’t remember, all about a child whose imaginary friend is the ghost of her dead mother; Vampyre….
What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm?
Hmm – not sure! I suppose it depends on the story! Maybe vampires, since they always have a special place in my heart :)
Favorites:
Favorite Paranormal themed Movie? Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show? Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Favorite Paranormal themed Book? Dracula
Favorite Author? Dorothy Dunnett
Favorite Urban Fantasy Author? Anne Rice
Favorite Genre that is NOT your own? Historical.
Favorite one of your Books? Aargh! Whichever I’m working on or thinking about! Blood Sin?
Who is your favorite of your own characters?
Saloman, because I’m thinking about him so much these days! He’s powerful and sexy and he has a sense of humour.
Which was the hardest to write?
I haven’t found any characters hard to write, to be honest. They’re the easy part for me!
What would you be if not a writer?
A librarian, probably, because I used to be one J. And I love books!
If you Could be a Paranormal Being, Who would you be?
Hmmm – a witch cackling in the background as she watches her spells work on people
If you could meet ay Urban Fantasy Character out there, Who would you like to meet?
Spike from Buffy – I might not survive, but at least I’d get a laugh :)
Quickies:
Vampires or Werewolves? Vampires. Mostly. (Love wolves too!)
Angels or Demons? Both
Reading or Writing? Both
Print or eBook? Both!
Hardback or Paperback? Don’t care
YA novels or Adult novels? Adult
Library or Bookstore? Depends how flush I am at the time.
Summer or Winter? Summer. Although there isn’t a huge difference in Scotland!
The Movie or The Book? The Book.
PNR or UF? Love them both
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
When I’m well into a story and it’s taking on a life of it’s own, and the characters, rather than my own ides, are driving it forward.
What is your least favorite part?
When an important scene I’ve been planning from the beginning just doesn’t work!
The Awakened by Blood Series in your own words?
Sensual, Gothic vampire romance about temptation, seduction, prejudice and understanding. And biting and fighting :) And finding yourself.
Any plans for more Books in the series?
Blood Eternal, the third book, is scheduled for release in October 2011 and it draws most of the threads together for the big finale. However, I do have ideas and would like to go back to it one day. It’s hard to leave characters alone once they’ve become such good friends!
What is coming up next for you?
Blood Eternal in October…
What are you working on right now?
A new vampire romance that I hope will turn into a series. It’s very different in both characters and tone from Awakened by Blood, but so far it’s great fun to write!
Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?
Hmmm – I always find it difficult to give such advice when I feel I’m still learning myself! But I would say, in general, keep reading as well as writing – constantly! - and learn from any feedback and criticism. And submit your work – you have to get it out there!
Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?
Just thank you! You mean more to me than you’ll ever know :).
Thank you so much for being here!
It’s been a pleasure, Larissa! Thank you for having me, and thanks for the fun questions!

I really like the cover..it has such a sexy appeal to it!
kimbers10[at]yahoo[dot]com
I love the covers for these books- very elegant, and sexy without being trashy or cheesy. That may sound weird, but trust me; it's totally a compliment.
b(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com
Buffy is still my favorite, too. :) And I would love to meet Spike - can I go with you? :)
The covers of your books are beautiful, I would definitely pick them up in the store to read the backs.

You've got to admire a passionate author who loves what she's doing. I wish i had the stamina and strength to sit down and actually WRITE a book. I think i'll stick to the easy route and just buy them and read them. Excellent interview!

Great interview and I've heard wonderful things about this series!
lilazncutie1215[at]yahoo[dot]com
Wow - how nice to wake up to so many comments already! Hello, everyone! Larissa, thanks for having me on your Bookish Life :).
Little Ms Bookish, you're welcome! I think I've always disappointed in tv or film versions of books I've loved. I suppose we all have different "visions" of a book.
Hi Melissa - it was fun answering too :). Glad you enjoyed it!
KimberlySue and Bethany C - Glad you like the covers! I love them too, and I think "elegant and sexy" sums them up pretty well :).
mpyff - of course you can come with me :). Good to hear the covers catch your eye!
Thank you, Teril! Glad you enjoyed the interview :).
Ricki and Vivien - I love the red dress too, and I do like that they repeat it in different settings for the series.
Thanks, Mocha&Latte! I do love what I do. Love reading too :)
Jeanette - thanks, and that's good to hear!
Marie

inale87 at gmx dot at
Hi Stehanie and Birgit! I'm delighted you like the covers. I think the red dress does work really well! And for anyone who's interested, the ruin in the background of Blood Sin, is St. Andrews Cathedral in Scotland, one of the most atmospheric places in the world :).
Hi Ina - nice to meet you! Glad you liked the interview and I hope you manage to try out the books :).
Marie
Great interview and wohoo for liking fantasy of all sorts, I just love good old epic fantasy :D

Hi Marie!
Going to meet Spike huh! I definitely want to go too!! Do you think there's similarities between him and Soloman? If so, did you write him that way subconciously?
Tons o' Luck with the next series!! Can't to hear all about it.
And Larissa, I Love your Easter themed header!LOL

Hi Blodeuedd! Me too :)
Thanks, Misha!
Diana, you're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the interview, and I totally agree about the covers - how lucky am I? :)
Thanks, Irene! I hope you do - read the books, I mean :). And thanks for encouragement re the new series!
Hi Yadkny - great to hear, and I hope you do!
Hello, Stephanie! Yes, of course you can come too :). Well I suppose Spike and Saloman are both undead, they both have a sense of humour, and are both a bit dangerous, but otherwise, I see them as very different characters. Saloman's maybe more like Spike's scary, sexy Dad :)
Hi Aik - good to know!
Marie
Great interview, Marie!
I probably went to see Bram Stoker's Dracula like 4 times when it came out in the theater. Have to agree it was compelling...

Another Buffy fan! Many of my friends make fun of me because I still love Buffy all these years later. I love it when I find other people that like that show.

I read the interview twice and thought that we had a lot in common.
I haven't read any books in the series but they are on my TBR.

Lizzie! Thank you! Glad you dropped in :)
Hi Michelle. I have to say that's verging on obsession- and I thoroughly approve :). I got the DVD for Christmas last year, and I can never get the peace to watch it once my youngest is in bed - how frustrating is that? :).
Hi Megggerfly. I look on Buffy as a bit of a classic - I love the humour that runs through it too!
Hi Danielle - that's good to know! Thank you!
Marie
What a funny interview!! I hadn't heard anything about Marie and her books, I've searched them on Goodreads and now I have in my wishlist, sounds really great and I love the vampires!! So, my vampire vein, is totally intrigued.
I want to congratulate the designer covers and Marie, because both covers are very attractive, I'm a geek of the covers, sorry!
By the way, I don't know how is the summer in Scotland, but in Mexico (yeah, I live here) the summer is very hot, so my favorite season is winter, though here there is not huge difference, I fear.
Thanks for the chance, I'm looking forward for these books.
Greetings from Chiapas, Mexico, Marie!!

Would you consider writing a historical romance or romantic fantasy? Those are my 2 fav genres.
thumbelinda03@yahoo.com
Congrats on the release! So glad there is going to be a third. Hopefully you will get the chance to come back to these characters again too in the future.
bacchus76 at myself dot com
Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments!
Petit, I'd love a dress like that too, only I have the uncomofortable feeling that it just wouldn't look the same on me!
Leni, I think that's so true. Good books and flms inspire others in many ways.
Linda, absolutely, I would :). In fact, I have written what I think of as fantasies: a sort of time-travel romance, and several futuristic fantasies. You can check them out on my website: www.MarieTreanor.com. I've also written a historical romance, but it's not in print right now, unfortunately!
Donna, thank you, and I would like to come back to the characters one day soon!
Marie

Ouch, I almost missed this one! Great interview!
So... Urban Fantasy rocks!:D I think that's exactly what draws us to it - the mix of normal urban life and the fantastic creatures and the atmospheric, shadowy, dark settings. Add the kick but heroes/heroines to that and we've got a fantabulous read!<3
LOL I'd be 'a witch cackling in the background as she watches her spells work on people' too. *evil laugh*
Thanks for the giveaway!
P.S. I love the covers of the books!
