Hey Everyone!
I’d like you all to help me welcome one of my favorite new authors of 2010, Stacia Kane!
I loved her Downside series books and I am IN LOVE with Terrible, so I was psyched when she agreed to give me an interview and she is even Giving away a Signed set of the Downside books! How awesome is that!
Enjoy The interview and check out the giveaway deets at the bottom of the post…
When did you first start writing?
I've always written, but I started writing with an eye toward publication at the end of 2001/early 2002, after my first daughter was born. I was home with her and I realized that was my chance, basically; it was time to go ahead and do it, if it was what I wanted to do. I had some fits and starts in there--took a lot of breaks, took a year off when I got pregnant with my second--and started publishing in 2006.
Have you always enjoyed Fantasy?
Oh, yes, totally. My brother (five years older than me) was a big D&D guy, and obsessed with Lord of the Rings. So from the time I was six or seven I was surrounded by it. I used to help him work up his games, and we watched the Bakshi LOTR all the time. We collected comic books, too. I was a huge fan of a book called THE WARLORD, which was about a fighter pilot who crashed into another world. There was a shapeshifting woman (Shakira--she turned into a cat) and wizards and an evil guy named Deimos who ended up being just a head mounted on a hand...it was awesome. My favorite books and movies have almost always been fantasy.
Why writing Urban Fantasy?
I just love the possibilities! You can do anything in UF. It can be as "normal" or as out there as you want, it can be any kind of world you want. It's just so much fun, really, and the world can become a character in a way it really can't in other genres.
Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?
Oh, tons. Neil Gaiman's run on SANDMAN, and especially his BBC series/book NEVERWHERE; that was a big one. Andrew Vachss's Burke books are amazing. CONAN THE BARBARIAN was one of my absolute favorite movies when I was a kid, and it still is. Shows like Buffy, of course. The movie THE CHANGELING is one of the scariest, most atmospheric movies I've ever seen, and I try to bring that sense of foreboding into my work a lot. My brother and I used to watch DOCTOR WHO late at night whenever we could. GHOSTBUSTERS, of course! Really, everything inspires me; images, throwaway lines in any movie or book...anything.
What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm?
I'm not really sure what you mean? I guess I'd say witchcraft, is that what you're looking for? I like the grittiness that can exist in UF worlds, and I really like witchcraft, and ghosts.
How did you come up with the "Downspeak"?
I picked up a book--I don't even remember when--at Barnes & Noble called THE WORD MUSEUM, a dictionary of archaic slang. And every once in a while I'd sort of flip through it, and when I started writing UNHOLY GHOSTS I thought, I'm writing a sort of alternate history, and I want to show the differences in socioeconomic levels and add another layer of "different" to the world, and I already had the Puritan imagery, so I thought why not, basically. I didn't want to use Ebonics or something already in use, because I didn't want to seem like I was co-opting an established culture, and I didn't want something associated more strongly with a certain group, either, because that sort of division doesn't exist in this world. So it just sort of came, basically, and I had so much fun with it, and with making it a bit different for every character, and using it--hopefully--so that the reader knows instantly where a character is from, what kind of life they've had. It becomes part of their character, at least I hope it does.
Favorites:
Favorite Paranormal themed Movie?
Oh, wow, there are so many! Maybe a tie between GHOSTBUSTERS and THE CHANGELING. They're both excellent, but so different from each other.
Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show?
I have to say Buffy, although I do love Supernatural a lot.
Favorite Paranormal themed Book?
Oh, wow, there are way too many to pick one!
Favorite Author?
Same as above, really. I love so many writers. Barbara Michaels, Herman Wouk, Andrew Vachss, Maeve Binchy...
Favorite Urban Fantasy Author?
Probably my friends Caitlin Kittredge and Richelle Mead.
Favorite Genre that is NOT your own?
I love gothic novels, and I love thrillers/suspense.
Favorite one of your Books?
UNHOLY GHOSTS.
Who is your favorite of your own characters? Why?
Oh, it's so hard to pick one, I love them all! Probably Chess, though, really. But Bump is the most fun to write. Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud from the Demons books were tons of fun to write, too.
Which was the hardest to write? Why?
Which character was the hardest to write? Probably Chess, again. She takes a lot out of me. And the hardest book so far was probably SACRIFICIAL MAGIC, the fourth Downside book, although CITY OF GHOSTS was really difficult, too, just because I had so much to wrap up and I was really afraid I wouldn't get to do more. After I finished that one I just sort of wandered around my house crying for like an hour; it was 1:30 in the morning.
What would you be if not a writer? Why?
Hopefully I'd be what I still am, which is a stay-home mom. I honestly loved doing that, and still do. I'm a homebody anyway, and I've honestly never found any job I've had particularly mentally/emotionally stimulating, whereas being at home I could always find things to do, things to entertain me and the girls, things to keep me busy...it made me happy, basically. Maybe it's not for everyone but I was very happy.
If you Could be a Paranormal Being, Who would you be?
Vampire. I want to live forever.
If you could meet ay Urban Fantasy Character out there, Who would you like to meet?
Oh, wow, there are so many. I guess I'd have to say any of mine, though, just because that would be such an interesting experience.
Quickies:
Coffee or Tea? Neither. I don't really like hot drinks.
Virtual or Real? Virtual or real what? Probably real, I guess?
Day or Night? Night. Completely.
Here or There? There.
Sooner or Later? Later.
Light or Dark? Dark.
Reading or Writing? Writing.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Finishing. :-) I love it all, I really do, but I guess editing is really the part I enjoy the most. Going back to see what I actually did is pretty cool.
What is your least favorite part?
The slump I hit at around 30k words, where I don't know what happens next and feel like the book is just crap and I should give up. Only stubbornness pushes any of my books beyond that point.
The Downside Ghosts Series in your own words?
Black magic, human sacrifice, sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll, and people just trying to survive.
Any plans for more Books in the series?
Absolutely! I've four chapters into the fifth one right now, and after that I have the sixth to write as well. I'd like to do at least nine; I have plots and a story arc for that many minimum, but I'd be happy to go to twelve, too, of course. Beyond that, though...part of me thinks it'd be great to write these characters forever, and part of me is very afraid of the series losing its way, if you know what I mean, and just slogging along. I don't like to think about it ending, though. That's a really scary thought.
What is coming up next for you?
I have a few short stories that will be in anthologies this summer, both Downside stories. The first is RICK THE BRAVE, and that'll be in the HOME IMPROVEMENT: UNDEAD EDITION anthology releasing August 2nd with Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, and a whole bunch of others. I'm extremely excited about that.
Then there's another for the MAMMOTH BOOK OF GHOST ROMANCE, which is, well, a romantic story; it's a bit sweeter and happier than the Downside books in general, so that was fun. It was nice to write a story for Chess where things actually worked out for her, and she ends up happy without the knowledge of something dark still looming in the future or that things could all fall apart any minute.
What are you working on right now?
Downside 5, edits for SACRIFICIAL MAGIC, and a new project I'm really excited about.
Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?
Read a lot and keep writing. And don't give up; don't let someone talk you out of it if it's what you want to do. I know everyone told me I could never be a writer, but I refused to listen, and now I get to write books for a living.
Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?
I can't thank them enough; they are the coolest people in the world, really. The reaction I've gotten, especially for the Downside books (although the Demons books also got a really lovely, warm reception, which was great) has been totally unexpected and totally overwhelming; seeing how passionate people are about the books, and how they've touched people, is just incredible. I never even dared to hope I'd have that kind of response. So I really, really do appreciate it; I can't say that enough.
Thank you so much for being here!
Thanks for having me!

Great post and thanks so much for making it international. I have wanted to read these for ages. I loved how Stacia described her Downside books.
Oh wow! I've heard so many incredible things about this author and the series. I really want to read it. I love that the author found some of her inspirations from her older brother.

great interview! i've never read the series, but i sure will :D
I find the Downside ghost series really interesting because I can't think of another series with a heroine and hero who are so incredibly flawed, yet likeable.
I like finding out what authors - and works - inspire other authors. Unfortunately, it always makes my to-read list longer. ^_^
This time, though, I've also got a movie to hunt down. The Changeling sounds nicely creepy, which means I'll have to watch it alone as I'm sure my husband won't watch it with me!
<3,

City of ghosts sounds awesome. Great interview.
Great interview and giveaway. She is an author thats on my TBR list. I've read great reviews for her books
Awesome interview and giveaway! Way to go!!!
She had me at Conan the Barbarian! Who doesn't love that movie? Seriously, I'd love to read the series, it's been on my "gotta" for ages.

I LOVE Stacia, I follow her blog and her posts are always just AWESOME. She's hilarious on twitter and I can't wait to get my hands on these books! I keep meaning to buy them, but now I'll wait and see if I can get signed copies!
I also love how she'd still be a SAHM, if she wasn't a writer. That's me, too!
I swear my husband is going to kill me when he sees how long my TBR list is growing. LOL. He'll be worried he'd lose his wife forever to books. LOL THanks for the great giveaway. :)
what a great giveaway
I've been wanting to read this seris.
Love the prize! The books look fantastic! Thanks for the chance to win!
Great interview! Thanks for the giveaway
I keep hearing about these books. The first review I ever read about the series was fairly negative as the reviewer didn't like the drug abuse theme in the story (or something) but I've since read and seen so many positive reviews from reviewers whose sites I visit regularly that I'm thinking that I'll have to find out just who this "Terrible" is!
I just started reading Unholy Ghosts yesterday and I'm already nearly finished with it. Excellent, excellent story.
Hey Lariss,
Killer giveaway! As always, I *bow* down to your interview prowess! Insight to Stacia Kane was terrific. Her books take you to another world. I can only hope to win this puppy of a giveaway! Thanx Stacia and Larissa!
See ya,

Great interview! I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Downside Ghost Series but I've been putting off reading... Gotta check out it as soon as possible!
Great interview and giveaway! I would love to read these books. I love dark urban fantasy
Thanks for this interview, these books sound really good. I want them! Thank you for this giveaway!
I can't wait for the next Downside book, I loved the first 3. It was great learning more about how downspeak was invented.
I love Stacia Kane and the Downside Ghosts series. I am looking forward to the next book (and hopefully the entire expanded series).
It was great to read about Stacia's creation and use of Downspeak in the series. I have always had and interest in dialects and sociolinguistics and it appears I'm not alone. Stacia did a great job making each individual's speach unique to them, the majority of the time I can tell who is speaking from the language and cadence used.
l feel the same, l love being at home and finding myself things to do and keeping busy! l hate both coffee and tea and hate how its the first thing anyone offers you (especially over here in the UK! lol)
Thanks for the interview
Great interview, these books seem really interesting!

Great interview! I haven't read anything by Stacia yet but I just added her to my TBR list!
Wonderful interview!
I first 'met' Stacia in a writers' forum, then started following her blog about a year ago. I'm always amazed at the passion she brings to her work.
I've not yet had the opportunity to read any of her work - my To Be Read mountain has at least a year's worth of books - but she's definitely on my list of authors I want to read, and will read.
I wish Stacia continued success with her work. She certainly deserves it!
Great interview Stacia, these books sound quite intriguing, right up my alley,
added them to my TBR pile.

Great interview! Just have to disagree on the being a vampire thing - I would NEVER wanto live forever... I'd have to watch all my loved ones die and see the world change as times go by and adapt all over again... Urgh, no thanks. I rather have one nice and full life and die knowing I lived it thoroughly ;D I'd like to be a witch, though! LOL
Thanks for the giveaway! And thanks for making it international!!! I've been dying to read something by Stacia for a while now! =)

Actually, this is strange. I read so many authors of this genre, but I have never picked up a Stacia Kane book! I'm pretty sure I've read short stories, and have read interviews, follow her online, etc., but not read anything. I think I have to make a trip to the book store on pay day LOL
Love the interview, very curious about these books now ^_^

Hi Stacia! Thanks for the fun interview, enjoyed learning more about you! I would like to ask how do you find the title for your novels? Is it inspiration or you play with words and then ask the opinion of a valued private VIP focus group (=aka agent/critic partner, etc.)?
Thanks for the fantastically generous giveaway!

Thanks for the giveaway, really awesome.
I've seen some of the authors work and i love it! love to win as well. Thanks
aah-susann@hotmail.com
Fabulous interview! The way you came up with the Downspeak is interesting, and it works exactly like you wanted it to :)
(I used to love the Conan movie too!)
Hi Calliope,
Hmm. What can I share about the plot of SM. Well, the title fits the book very well. There's a major event at the end of the book that's going to cause some serious changes (is that too much of a spoiler? I hope not!) And Chess finds herself in totally unfamiliar territory in her case and in her life.
How's that?
No release date yet, but it looks like it's going to be spring 2012, which makes me sad. :-(
Hi Stella,
It's actually a bit of both, or it depends. With PERSONAL DEMONS the title was the concept, if you know what I mean. With UNHOLY GHOSTS I came up with that title about 7 or 8k words in, I think, because I wanted something that would be a good solid hint as to what kind of world it was, so we had the sort of Church aspect and the ghosts, and I thought it sounded good, too.
UNHOLY MAGIC was originally titled DOWNSIDE GHOSTS. But Del Rey didn't think it was really sexy/spooky/whatever enough, so I made a huge long list of titles, all of which were pretty lousy. My editor actually came up with UM, and we--agent, editor, me, other Random House people--all liked it immediately.
CITY OF GHOSTS was really hard. I went through like four different titles for that one.
I like to have a title as early as possible, so I can play up to it in the book. It helps clarify the theme, a little bit, at least for me; I like my titles to speak to some aspect of the book. Like with SACRIFICIAL MAGIC, the fourth book, I didn't come up with the title until the book was written, but because sacrifice is such a huge part of the book--in all sorts of ways--it just fit right away, like it was there all along. (I originally wanted to call it DOWNSIDE MAGIC, but again, not "it" enough. I get the feeling they don't want me to use "Downside" in my titles.)
Right now I'm trying to come up with a title for the 5th book--I'm about 30k into it--and I'm thinking I'd like to call it GHOST BOUND, but I don't know how everyone will feel about it. I really like it, though, and think it fits well.
So that's it, really. It just depends. Sorry I don't have a better answer!
great interview! :)
I just finished Unholy Ghosts and started Unholy Magic. I love this world! I can't put them down and get a little irritated with life that I have too! I'm really looking foreword to reading the rest of this series and reading the Demon series!
Thanks so much for this interview! I've been meaning to read these, I just haven't gotten my hands on them yet! But they sound right up my alley!! Can't wait! :)

I've been meaning to read Stacia's books for a long time now but just haven't had the opportunity. I love the fact that she's a Supernatural fan like me. I can never seem to make a choice between Dean and Sam. I can relate more to Sam's character, though. Look forward to reading these books and hope to win:)

Thank you Stacia for the interview and give away.
I always like it when authors "fill in the gaps" with short stories. Not all storylines are able to be novels, sometimes something needs to be told a bit more quickly.
Thank you

Hiya. I'm Sakatsu. Thanks so much for the review! I've been following Stacia Kane on Twitter for a while now and I absolutely adore her. Haven't read any of her books yet though. Hopefully I can win some. I've got my fingers crossed! And done everything to enter!
Thanks for this interview..I love, love, love Stacia and all of her books. I'm so excited for the release Sacrificial Magic!
I always figured Stacia would be a coffee drinker ;-)
And Downspeech is brilliant. It took me a while to get used to it, but once I figured it out, it was easy to read and charming in a Triumph City kind of way.
fantastic interview and thanks for the giveaway! I've been wanting to read these books since a friend told me to! :)
Great interview hon and I really would love to win the giveaway. I have always wanted to get my hands on this. Stacia Kane is one of the heavy hitters whose name I hear everywhere, but my book money is sparse LOL! Thanks to you both for this. Good luck to everyone :)

Hi Stacia
I really love your first book and I have the others on my TBR pile.
My all time favorite TV show is also Buffy but there's a lot of other great shows as well:-)
Great interview and thank you for the chance to win your books!
I love Stacia and I love the Downside series! My favorite part of this interview is probably the final question about how Stacia regards her fans (readers! ;).
Thanks for the giveaway, and for making it international. :D
I've been meaning to read these for awhile!!
Thanks for the great giveaway
