Hey Guys! Let’s give a warm welcome to Indie Author H.P. Mallory! She was super kind for answering my questions and is even offering an eCopy of one her books! Details at the end of the post…
When did you first start writing?
I have always written in some format. All through high school and college, I took creative writing courses. Then when I moved to England about two years ago, the incredible history and beauty of the countryside just beckoned to me and I started writing my first book, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble. I finished my second book, To Kill A Warlock, while I was living in Scotland.
Have you always enjoyed Fantasy and the Paranormal?
Yes. As a kid, I used to love the Twilight Zone Marathons (still do) and I live for those shows about true haunting. I think I’ve seen every one! LOL I just love the creativity available to an author in these genres.
Why writing Urban Fantasy?
I love strong heroines, but flawed somehow in their strength and I love a kick ass woman! LOL so urban fantasy seemed a good genre to tie together the strong female protagonist, elements of romance and the paranormal.
Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?
Yes, I am a huge fan of the Anita Blake series before they got a little too weird for me about halfway through. I love the Sookie Stackhouse series and I loved the early Black Dagger Brotherhood books, the one about Z especially.
What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm?
Um, not totally sure what you mean here but in terms of creature types, I really wanted to write about creatures who haven’t gotten a lot of play. That’s why I wrote about a fairy in law enforcement and a witch. Also, in my second book, To Kill A Warlock, you’ll meet a whole slew of creatures including one creature type that I just made up. LOL
What does being an Indie Author mean?
Being an indie author essentially means being self published. For me, it was a choice I made after I landed a huge NY agent and that went nowhere. I sat on my books for two years and then read about various indie successes and thought, hey, I can do this. So, I started with Amazon and suddenly my books were flying off the proverbial shelf so I thought, hmm, maybe I’ll try Barnes and Noble. They are doing even better there. I really am amazed and humbled by the response to my books and this was the best decision I could have made. I love the control I have over my career and the fact that if I succeed or fail, I have only myself to thank.
What do you find to be the hardest thing about being an Indie Author?
Probably getting people to take me seriously—at least it was in the beginning. Now that my books have a ton of reviews and good reviews, many people actually don’t even realize I am an indie until they visit my website (www.hpmallory.com) where I talk all about being an indie. So, now that that is beyond me, maybe the hardest part is having to do all the ground work to get noticed.

I love Jolie because she is relatable. I love that she is strong but flawed and has to learn to trust herself and love herself. I just think she is very real.
Which was the hardest to write? Why?
Fire Burn because it’s a really involved storyline with lots going on.

In my day job I work in online marketing so, an online marketer. LOL

What is your favorite part of the writing process? I actually love editing, strangely enough. The writing is the hardest part—getting it down there. But I love coming back and cleaning it up and adding in little funny details here and there. The polishing is my favorite.
What is your least favorite part? Writer’s block. Or writing something you aren’t sure about and having to rewrite it.
Can you talk a bit about both your series?
Sure, Both are first books in projected series. Fire Burn is about a psychic who learns she’s a witch and becomes a pawn in an Underworld battle. The next book in that series, Toil and Trouble, will be released Jan 1.
To Kill A Warlock is about a fairy in law enforcement. It’s a whodunit basically. I’ll be starting the follow up book to Warlock as soon as I finish TNT.
What is coming up next for you?
Just have to finish up TNT and then I’m going to take a tiny break and start the next book in the Warlock series.
What are you working on right now? Finishing Toil and Trouble.
Anything you would like to say to your readers out there? Just thank you to everyone who has taken a chance or will take a chance on me and my books. It has been such an amazing ride and I couldn’t be happier with my success! It’s very humbling!

HP - I hate to tell you this, but you are going to have to fight me off in order to meet Eric, LOL. Best wishes on your books.
I was wondering what sort of research you've had to do for your books and if there was anything in particular you learned that really stuck with you.

These books do sound interesting, especially Fire Burn. The covers are very cute.
Great interview :) I've never read her books but they seem great!
Oh wow I think this is the first time I see an author liking the editing part!
Fabulous interview! Love that she's a fan of the BDB and especially Z, he's my favorite along with John Matthew. And I would like to meet Eric Northman as well, good choice! Thanks for these really fun questions and answers!
I really liked this interview, and it made me really curious about the books because I haven't read them yet
I've heard so many good things about the H.P. Mallory's series. Unfortunately I did not had the chance to start reading them yet, but I love the design of the covers.
I love this author! The story about how she decided to become an indie author is very inspirational. I'm glad she was brave enough to put herself out there because her work is brilliant.
Great interview!
Great interview. Thanks for the contest. Tore923@aol.com
When I first saw these books I wasn't sure about them because of their covers. After reading some reviews from bloggers about them I definitely would like to read them. The saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is true =) love bloggers. Thanks for this contest!
I love the book cover. It's absolutely beautiful :D
Sounds like a great series, going to have to add it to my wishlist.
Thanks for the great interview.
I love that your covers are not serious. Gives a lighter feel for us, everything not so super serious, like real life can be.
Thanks for the contest!
