This Giveaway is over!
Thanks so much for participating!
Hey Guys! I’m in Upstate New York right now, but I had to be here online to share a great Interview and Giveaway with one of my favorite new authors this year!
I have an immense pleasure to present to you, Gini Koch! Giveaway deets are at the end of the post =)
Enjoy!
When did you first start writing?
Over a dozen years ago now. I’d always had story ideas, but because I’d been told you had to outline to write, I’d try to outline and then get nowhere. Finally, the voices in my head were so loud, I wrote them down to shut them up. I looked up 8 hours later -- I had the first 200 pages of a novel written and realized this was what I was really meant to be doing. The rest, as they say, is history.
Have you always enjoyed Sci-fi and Fantasy?
Yes, but my first genre love was mystery, then horror, biography/autobiography, then science fiction & fantasy. But throughout it all, what’s been my constant is humor.
Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?
Everything I’ve ever seen and everything I’ve ever read. LOL. I know, that’s not what you mean in this case. I get more of my inspiration from music than anything else. But I think it’s impossible not to be influenced by what you’ve seen, heard, read and experienced. It all goes in there, mixes around, and comes out as “your” creations. Which is, when you think about it, very cool.
What is your favorite subject in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy Realm?
Hmmm…I don’t know if I’d call it a subject, but what I think I like best about SF/F is that you can look at the human condition in different ways via SF/F than you can via any other genre. Before other genre lovers protest, what I mean is that, for example, it’s only in SF/F where you can have a visitor from another world come and react to our human foibles and issues and general humanness.
The other thing I really love about writing SF/F is that I can pretty much do what I want. It’s my world, my rules. My rules have to make some kind of sense, but as long as they do, if I want every alien from Alpha Centauri to be drop-dead gorgeous, why, so it shall be.
I love Kitty and Martini's chemistry, were they always meant to be in your head?
There’s two ways to take that question. The first is: were they meant to be IN my head, and the answer is, of course, they’re mine. I’m the god, I created them, they were indeed supposed to be in my head, because that’s where they came from -- my mind.
However, I think you may mean: were they always meant to be TOGETHER as a couple. The answer is: I didn’t know how it was going to go when I started writing. I’m a linear writer -- I start with the title, then the first line, then I go on until it’s the end. “Touched by an Alien”, in particular, was extremely organic for me -- I felt like I was merely transcribing what the characters were telling me, including their names and what they looked like, did for a living, etc. So, midway through, my crit partner asked me who Kitty was going to end up with. I had to turn away from the computer screen and actually ASK myself. The answer was Martini. But I didn’t know until that moment. And even then, I wasn’t 100% sure it’d work out. But it did.
How did you come up with the world in the Kitty Katt series?
It was originally from a dream I’d had -- a very dark, noir-ish dream. I’d originally intended to write a dark, short, horror story. Kitty took over early, and then Martini breezed onto the page, and that was that. In terms of everything else, though, like I said before, the characters told me what was going on and what their world was about.
Favorites:
Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy themed Movie?
I have several (I have a tough time with favorites, ‘cause I rarely have just one favorite of anything, other than husband and child):
Dogma, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black, Star Wars: A New Hope, Mystery Men, Big Trouble in Little China, Mortal Kombat and Serenity.
Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy themed TV Show?
Firefly
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy themed Book?
Good Omens, by Terry Pritchett & Neil Gaiman
The Discworld Series, by Terry Pratchett
Favorite Author?
Terry Pratchett, Robert Silverberg, A. Conan Doyle, P.J. O’Rourke, Robert Benchley, O. Henry, Dave Barry
Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Author?
Terry Pratchett
Favorite one of your Books?
Whichever one I’m writing right now. I admit it -- I love all my books. If I didn’t love them, they wouldn’t be with my agent or my editor.
Who is your favorite of your own characters? Why?
Oooh, this is a TOUGH one! As with my books, I love all my characters, even my villains. And each one is important to me in some way. If forced to pick, I’d have to say the characters who originally were so loud and demanding they forced me to start writing, and then Kitty, because “Touched by an Alien” is what got me both a great agent and a great publisher. But I love them all, and miss every one of them when I’m working on a different character/s’ book.
Which was the hardest to write? Why?
I don’t do hard to write. In my experience, if it’s hard, then there’s something wrong with it. I write under several pen names, and I can say that historicals require the most research in order to be even remotely accurate for a sense of time and place. But everything, even fantasy novels set on a world I’ve made up, requires some kind of research. Gun to my head? The hardest to write was the first one -- not because writing it was hard, but because it took me so long TO write.
What would you be if not a writer? Why?
What I was before I was a writer -- a marketer. I spent the majority of my life in marketing, and it’s what I do and did for a living. It’s not what I am, though. I AM a writer. I worked in marketing. So, really, I’ve always been and always will be a writer.
If you could meet any Sci-Fi/Fantasy Character out there, Who would you like to meet?
Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity. And then I’d jump his bones.
Quickies:
Coffee or Tea? Both
Up or Down? Up
Virtual or Real? Real
Right or Left? Straight ahead
Day or Night? Night
Here or There? Here
Sooner or Later? Later
Light or Dark? Dark
Fast or Slow? Fast
ACs or Superbeings? ACs
Angels or Demons? Humans
Reading or Writing? Writing
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
All of it. There isn’t one part of it I like less than the rest, and that includes editing.
What is your least favorite part?
The waiting. Publishing is a SLOW business. You can go nuts with how slow it is. My response to this has been, is, and always will be the same thing: while I’m waiting, I write another book.
The Kitty Katt Series in your own words?
It’s the best series ever written and a deal at twice the price! (Hey, you really can’t blame a girl for trying…)
The Alien series follows Katherine “Kitty” Katt, the world’s best accidental badass, as she discovers first that the Roswell rumors are true -- with a twist -- and then not only learns that there are both good and bad aliens and lots of life on other planets, but gets involved in the fight to protect this planet. As the series goes on, there’s more than just parasitic aliens to deal with, as well as more secrets and conspiracies to discover and disrupt.
How many books do you have planned for the series?
Lots. As of right now, I have the next several books mapped out in my mind, at least as much as I can map. But I love these characters and spending time with them, and I can easily carry the series on, and not by doing the same thing over and over again.
I like that the characters are changing -- Kitty, Martini, all the others, are different in each book. Still the same characters, but they’re going through different events and all of that changes them. I see each book as a progression of these characters from where they started to where they’re going, just like regular life for all of us. I don’t think being married and having children means you stop living or stop being an interesting person.
Basically, as long as the characters have stories to tell, I’ll be telling them. And Kitty assures me she’s never going to get dull, staid or boring because she will, and I quote, “always rock it”.
Do you have any other series in the works?
Yes, I do, several. As I said before, I write under different pen names. My agent’s shopping them, and I don’t like to talk about anything that hasn’t sold. (’Cause I’m superstitious that way, that’s why. LOL)
HOWEVER, I have two short stories written under my Anita Ensal pen name coming out in two DAW anthologies. “Wanted” will be in “Love and Rockets”, which will release on Dec. 7, 2010 (yes, the same day as “Alien Tango”…can we say busy, boys and girls? LOL); and “Being Neighborly” will be in “Boondocks Fantasy”, which will release on Jan. 4, 2011. Then “Alien in the Family” will release on April 5, 2011. So I’m going to be busy. But it’s a great busy, so I’m pretty thrilled.
What is coming up next for you?
Finishing edits on Book 4 of the Alien series, “Alien Proliferation”, then rolling into Book 5, “Alien Diplomacy”.
What are you working on right now?
I’m replying to this in August, though it’ll go up on your blog in September. So right NOW I just finished my galley edits on “Wanted”, and am in the middle of my galley edits for “Alien Tango”, and in the midst of editorial edits on “Alien in the Family”. When this publishes, I expect to be working on edits for “Alien Proliferation” and galleys for “Being Neighborly”, with galley edits coming for “Alien in the Family”.
Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?
Lots and lots and lots. Much of it’s out there on guest blogs I’ve done, and I lecture on it all the time. But, in brief, I have this to say: Writers write. If you want to write, just do it. And never give up. The definition of a published author is someone who never quit.
Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?
What I say every time, ‘cause it’s true: You…complete…me. Hearing from fans is the most exciting, emotionally fulfilling part of this journey. And I LOVE my fans -- my fans are the most fun, funny, awesome folks out there. (Admittedly, I could be a TAD biased, but whatever, they’re MY fans, so they ROCK.)
Oh, and do your girl a solid and preorder “Alien Tango” and “Alien in the Family”! And, if you’re looking for some awesome Science Fiction Romance short stories, preorder “Love and Rockets”. And if you’re looking for some awesome short fantasy stories, preorder “Boondocks Fantasy”. (Yes, it’s very true: these days, preorders MATTER.)
Thank you so much for being here!

@TJ - thanks for the Twitter follow, good luck in the contest!
@Lucky'sLuna - thanks for the Twitter follow and glad you like that I bring the funny. Passionate? Yes. Process...erm...not so much...LOL
@Danielle - I LOVE Dogma (I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan). It's possibly my #1 fave movie of all time (well, after Lady & the Tramp, the Aristocats, and 101 Dalmatians...and no, I'm not kidding).
@Blodeuedd - yeah, I took the long road to SF/F, but I enjoyed every minute of it.
@Kulsuma - good luck in the contest!
@Sarah the first - oh, come to the Alien side of life...come to us...*plays alluring music*
@Tore - I own all 7 seasons of Buffy (and all 5 of Angel and *sniff* all 1 of Firefly) and watch them regularly. 'Cause they help my "process"! Really!
@Glory - As said to Sarah, with the same alluring music playing, come to us and walk on the Alien side of life...
@Jessica - Thanks for the Twitter follow! And, well, if you're writing about aliens, my series is a total must read! I swear it upon a stack of Ancients' manuals (little in-joke for those who've already read Touched by an Alien)
@Sully - my fave pig, I LOVE Mystery Men! It's a family fave, and we watch it repeatedly. And quote it even more often.
@Sarah the second - Thanks for the Twitter follow! And I love, love, LOVE the Discworld. Though "Good Omens" is my fave book, probably of all time. Got to meet Sir Pterry at the NA Discworld con last year. For, you know, a nano second, but still, we breathed the same air! (Yes, I AM a Pratchett geek, why do you ask?)
@Melissa - 2nd time's the charm. Thanks for the Twitter follow!
@Lu - Thanks for the Twitter follow and for the TBR! (Not so sure I have an actual "process" but I'm happy to pretend...)
@vvb32 - oh, the series definitely rocks. Each book has its own soundtrack. Truly. ('Cause Kitty and I both like to have the tunes blasting 24/7.)
Well the title's certainly make these books sound amazing, and with such a fun author, they must be great! :D
