Hey guys! Well, I was reading around in Book Blog land when I came across THIS POST about covers by Caroline on One Book Away From Heaven. She talked about great and awful French covers of her favorite Authors, Books and Series.
Well, that got me thinking about covers here in Brazil and after a loooong day of lazing around research, I have come up with some great versions and some very sad and disturbing facts about the publishing world and the society of the country I call Home.
Let’s begin =)
So, here are the covers for The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith:
The translation of the titles it perfectly matched to the originals. I love these covers, so simple and dark.
The Sookie Stackhouse series has only been recently released around here and only because of True Blood. The only books available are the first (Dead Until Dark) and the second (Dead in Dallas). The third is set to come out later this year.
The first two images are for Book 1 and the third for Book 2. The interesting thing is that they are all from different publishers… So strange. There is also a True Blood based cover for Book 1, but it’s the same as the U.S., so i didn’t think it necessary to add it here.
The House of Night series almost caught up around here. It’s funny that usually Y.A. books and series, like Harry Potter, do very well, get translated and released pretty quick here, but other titles take a while…
The covers above are the current ones for the series, kinda meh, no? the ones bellow are for the first 3 books that were released before the revamping above.
Personally the initial ones are way cooler, dontcha think??
One of last year’s biggest releases was Shiver and I have yet to read it… but a Brazilian version is coming out really soon and I actually love its cover. Check it out bellow:
I am a HUGE Vampire Academy fan, but sadly only the first 2 books have come out around here and the second has the same cover as in the U.S. However, book 1 got an original one, but the name is “The Kiss of Shadows”… Kinds weird in my opinion…
Here is the cover for the Y.A. Anthology, Prom Nights from Hell, such a great cover!
These are some books I found at a bookstore here… Easily recognizable hehe. The finny thing is, I was super excited to them in the wild, since my crazy book reading thing started when I was in israel, I hadn’t had a chance to see books like that in Portuguese…
Those were a pain pretty easy to find online, but when it came to finding Paranormal Romances or even Historical or Contemporary romances, it was extremely annoying and that was I realized how prejudiced society is in Brazil about anything tagged as Romance.
I remember as a kid, seeing my Great-Grandma reading these cheap paperback books that she bought in newsstands and has a series name as “Bianca”, “Sabrina” or “Julia”.
I realized that most Romance author are still being published that way around here, including: Michele Hauf, Diane Palmer, Jacquelyn Frank, Lara Adrian and so many more, with the exception of a few authors such as Noah Robets (and her pseudonym, JD Robb) who seem to be everywhere here.
I can’t even imagine seeing someone I know reading one of those series, it is seen with so much disgust by the Brazilian society. I find that so sad, I LOVE Paranormal Romance and more recently have had the chance to check our some great Historical and Contemporary ones and it really upsets me that I live in a society that frowns upon such great authors just because they write romance.
I also found by accident that Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, the first book in one of my favorite series EVER, was translated and published here in 2002/2003 and none of the other books in series were published after that! How awful!
Bitten was translated as “Matilha” = Pack and then changed to “Fome De Loba” = Wolf Hunger.
Last but not least, in the last few months the wonderful Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward has started being released in Portuguese here and NOT in a “silhouette” style… YAY!
These are the cover for Books 1 and 2, the titles are perfectly in sync with the originals.
Phew, that’s it for the result of my very tiring research LOL.
I’ll probably come back and add more to this post when and if more of my favorite books or series come out in Portuguese.

Only 2 OF THE VA BOOKS? Oh, man, that sucks! The Vampire Diaries covers look great! For the house of night, I like the unvamping ones with the models better than the other ones! I haven't read Shiver yet either!
@Kailia
I KNOW! how awful! I thank my lucky stars everyday that i get to read all theses books in its original language LOL =)))
I prefer those covers too! the second one is pretty awesome!!!
How awful! I wish that all the wonderful books I've read were also published there. It's unfair. The only cover I really liked was the Shiver cover,if you get a chance to read it, do. I loved it!
Wow it is sad to see how the public treats romance novels - no matter what country you are in.
Ohhh very interesting!!! Never seen Brazilian covers before.
Funny the cover for Ward are the same as the French ones.
I really don't like the cover for Bitten and the Vampire Academy
I do love the cover from the Vampire Diaries and Prom night from Hell.
I hope to see new covers as you found them =)
@Cynthia
I have shiver on my shelf... will get to it soon hehe =))) thanks!
@Lili
I totally agree... it is really upsetting!
@Pattepoilue
hehe that is funyy =)
I dont like those either!!!
abd the VD and anthology ones are my fave too =)))
Thanks hon!
I love the Black Dagger covers! Vamp Diaries look good too. You know what, I think the True Blood covers here in America are the UGLIEST things ever. My hubs is an artist and he looked and said you're kidding right? To me that's the worst part of those books.

I think this is one of the best titled posts this month! :)
Great research! I do have to say though, I still hate the JR Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood book covers. I don't like the US one's... too bad these are so much the same. However, makes it easier to spy them! :)
I enjoyed this post! It's so interesting how book covers differ around the world.
@luv46kdz
Im not a fan of the sookie books in the US either! =))
@Melissa
Awwwww Thank you so much hon! =)))
hehe its true... I recognized them instantly which is not true of some other books =)
@Diana
Thanks!!! I totally agree! =)
Oooh you're from Brazil! It's interesting that you have Brazilian editions for books over there. I'm from the Philippines and because English is used as the medium of instruction in schools, the bookstores here mostly carry American or UK editions. International editions look so interesting though!
oh yeah... and the majority here dont even speak english hehe It can be very annoying lOL
Thanks for stopping by! =)
Cool post! Yeah, the cover of Prom Nights From Hell is dark and yet eye-catching at the same time. I'll have to check out how many different covers are there for the English version!
@Josette
Thanks! I agree, thats a great one =)
I actually prefer the revamped Brazilian covers for the HON series to the ones they started with. That said, all that cleveage fits all that crazy love quadrangle-whatever better (mean no offence to fans of the series, but can't stand it).
Really don't like that cover for Bitten, which is one of my favourite books ever. I do love the cover for Prom Nights from Hell, stunning cover!! And I adore that cover for Shiver as well!
@Cem
I agree! I dont like the Bitten one either... but the anthology one, is gorgeous! =D
