Why not start my Paranormal YA themed post with a series that has brought something very new to the genre. =)
I am a huge Rachel Vincent fan. I absolutely adore her Werecats series (I’ll review them soon =]) and when she came ou with a YA one, I just had to get it.
Kaylee is a Bean Sidhe, but she doesn’t know it and having the urge to scream her lungs out and realizing that the person she looked at and that ignited that urge is dead, is stuff from nightmares and can drive anyone crazy.
That’s when start following Kaylee’s story and with her we find out that her father and uncle had been hiding her nature and powers from her. Her father had even left to live in Ireland, unable to cope with loosing his wife and having to raise Kaylee.
The family dinamic is this series is very interesting. I love how Kaylee confronts her dad for not being there and not telling her the truth. She is a very strong character even throughout the most dire circumstances of her Bean Sidhe nature.
We also get some romance for Kaylee in the form of cute boy Nash. Nash is also a Bean Sidhe, but as is the nature of the male of their race, he doesn’t have the screaming urge, but is able to help her control it. One of the biggest draws in this series for me is their romance and I just can’t wait to see what’s in store for them.
One of ma favorite characters is this series is the Grim Reaper Tod. His relation to Nash and his personality just make things more interesting. I just love his friendship with Kaylee and I keep expecting a love triangle to emerge.
One thing that bothers me in this series was Nash putting pressure on Kaylee to have sex with him in book 2, My Soul to Save. I got really annoyed with him and I just hope he get a grip on that.
All in all, Vincent’s Soul Screamers series is a great addition the the YA world and I absolutely recommend to any YA book lover out there. You will not be disappointed!
- My Favorite Book in the Series: My Soul to keep (book #1). It was the start and it set up so much potential that you couldn’t help but love it =)
- My Least Favorite Book in the Series: My Soul to Save (Book #3). it wasn’t bad, but it could have been better, it didn’t me excite me as much and Nash started to get on my nerves.
