Hey Everyone! How you all doing today?
I am so happy to have here today the Author of the October Daye series. Seanan McGuire. I love this series and can’t wait to read the second book that just came out on March 2nd, A Local Habitation.
You can read my review of the first book in the series, Rosemary and Rue, HERE! She is also giving away a SIGNED Copy of the new book! Giveaway deets at the bottom =)
Enjoy…
- When did you first start writing? According to my mother, as soon as I figured out what the alphabet was for. So a pretty long time ago.
- Have you always been interested in Fantasy? Oh, absolutely. I was a fairy tale nut as a child, and I just never outgrew that stage.
- Why writing Urban Fantasy? Because that's what I feel like writing. I love the combination of modern setting and old ideas. It's like the delicious Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of fantasy goodness.
- Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you? Peter Beagle's THE LAST UNICORN, Tanya Huff's SUMMON THE KEEPER, and Emma Bull's WAR FOR THE OAKS. LABYRINTH, NIGHT OF THE COMET, and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (the musical, not the old black and white, although that's fun, too). Stephen King, James Tiptree Jr., and Janet Kagan.
- What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm? The collision between our world and the other worlds that are out there, just waiting to make trouble.
- Favorite Paranormal themed Movie? SLITHER, directed by James Gunn, starring Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks.
- Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show? SUPERNATURAL for the first three seasons, and now FRINGE.
- Favorite Paranormal themed Book? FIRE AND HEMLOCK, by Diana Wynne Jones.
Favorites:
- Favorite Author? Stephen King.
- Favorite Paranormal Romance Author? Kelley Armstrong.
- Favorite one of your Books? AN ARTIFICIAL NIGHT (book three, it comes out in September).
- Who is your favorite of your own characters? Toby. She's damaged but she's strong, and I love her to pieces. Which is good, because I spend so damn much time with her.
- Which was the hardest to write? A LOCAL HABITATION was definitely difficult to write, because it was very tricky and twisty, so it took a lot of juggling to keep everything in the air.
- What would you be if not a writer? ...I have no idea. I've always been a writer. A cartoonist, maybe. I'd probably focus more energy on art if I didn't write.
Quickies:
Coffee or Tea? Coffee, with LOTS of milk and Splenda.
Up or Down? "She chose down? Too late now..."
Virtual or Real? Real.
Right or Left? Sinister!
The Fae or Shifters? Fae.
Friends or Seinfeld? COUPLING.
Reading or Writing? Both.
- What is your favorite part of the writing process? Page one.
- What is your least favorite part? The third time I have to re-write page one.
- The October Daye Series in your own words? Fairy tale noir -- VERONICA MARS meets the Brothers Grimm in a dark alley, beats them up, and takes their lunch money.
- I've seen a cover foe a third October Daye Book, a**ny plans for more Books after that? Oh, absolutely. I'm in the middle of writing book five, and there's a lot of story left to tell.
- What is coming up next for you? After A LOCAL HABITATION, I'll be putting on my Mira Grant pants for the release of FEED, the first book in the Newsflesh trilogy. I've also got an ongoing series of short stories running in The Edge of Propinquity, called "Sparrow Hill Road," about a hitchhiking ghost named Rose Marshall and her cross-country quest to find the man who killed her.
- What are you working on right now? Right now, I'm working on the fifth Toby book (THE BRIGHTEST FELL), the third Newsflesh book (BLACKOUT), "Sparrow Hill Road," a paranormal YA called SIT, STAY, I HATE YOU, and a book called MIDNIGHT BLUE-LIGHT SPECIAL, about a family of monster hunters. I don't sleep much.
- Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to
become a published Author someday? Write. Write all the time. Solicit HONEST feedback, and train your friends to tell you when something is crap. Remember that everyone sucks when they start, and keep writing. Prepare for rejection. Success is only achieved when you get to the other side.
- Anything you would like to say to your fans out there? Thank you all so much for reading. It means the world to me, and it helps me sell enough books to feed my cats. I'm really, really honored.
- Thank you so much for the interview!
Thank you for having me!

I loved the interview! Very interesting! I know from my personal experience that it's not easy to interview, but you seem to manage pretty well, dear! I liked the idea of quickies! :-)
Love you,
Moonlight
Great interview. I agree with her about her favorite paranormal shows. I liked Supernatural for a while, and then got tired of it (even though I love Jared!). Now I'm on to Fringe. J.J. Abrams is a genius: I have all the seasons of Alias, too.

This is the first I have heard of Seanan McGuire but she sounds like a winner. I liked when she said she would be a cartoonist, maybe if she was not an author. Actually a carnoonist and author go together.
Loved your interview. I enjoy learning little facts about the authors.

If the October Daye Series has any resemblence to Veronica Mars, I'm in. I've had Rosemary and Rue on my wish list and now I'll have to add A Local Habitation.

I haven't read any books by this author but off to check this series out. I especially like the idea of the hitchhiking ghost and the cross-country quest to find the man who killed her.

I really loved Rosemary & Rue, probably because I'm a California Bay Area native, and I loved the way Seanan infused the landscape with faerie magic. And I'm doubly thrilled that she lists Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock as one of her favorite paranormal books. I've read it 14 times!
Can't wait to read A Local Habitation! Thanks for the great giveaway!
