Crystal & Bone: Who's Your Hottie?
By L.C. Glazebrook
http://lcglazebrook.blogspot.com
The October Girls, Crystal and Bone, were your typical teen-aged best friends, worried about fashion on a budget, trendy pop stars, and all those fumbling, unsophisticated boys at Parson's Ford High School.
Well, actually, Crystal wasn't all that typical--she's the latest in the generational line of Aldridge witches who have the responsibility of guarding the Orifice, a mysterious, oozing cavern that connects this world to Darkmeet. But Crystal doesn't want the job, because it means she has to remain Appalachian trailer-trash for the rest of her life, and she has plans for community college and the big city.
But everything changed when Bone was run over by a truck and got stuck at 16 forever. Crystal gets depression and drops out of school and now is trying to earn her GED and doesn't have time for boys. And she's not keeping up with the folk magic her momma is trying to teach her, though she's learned enough to consort with the dead and can't resist helping Bone come back from the other side of the grave.
That's complicated enough, but then there's all these guys around. Right?
CRYSTAL: Bone, if I help you come back from the dead, will you promise to stay away from bad boys?
BONE: Oh, you mean like Dempsey, the hot movie director who wants to make a horror movie in parson's Ford?
CRYSTAL: I can't help it. He says French words.
BONE: And the leather and the cute little silver chains don't do a thing for you, do they?
CRYSTAL: You know I'm loyal to Pettigrew.
BONE: Do I?
CRYSTAL: Umm, you've been watching, haven't you? The Orifice is right there on my bedroom wall. I'll bet you know more than you're letting on.
BONE: Gross. Do I look like a pervert?
CRYSTAL: You look like a car-crash victim wearing seven pounds of cobwebs. And what's with that floral-print blouse?
BONE: Family. They'll just bury you any old way.
CRYSTAL: Well, I'm in enough trouble just bringing you back from the dead. If you go out there and start fooling around and breaking hearts, who knows what might happen?
BONE: Heh heh. Yeah. Who knows?
CRYSTAL: Stay away from Dempsey. He's bad news.
BONE: Well, I'm already sort of seeing someone.
CRYSTAL: That was fast.
BONE: No, I mean "over there," in Darkmeet. A hunky guy with tight jeans and T-shirt, Robert Pattinson eyebrows, Brad Pitt lips, George Clooney charm, Johnny Depp cool.
CRYSTAL: Oooh, when can I meet him?
BONE: Pettigrew, remember?
CRYSTAL: (Sigh) Yeah. Momma's love spells. What can you do?
BONE: Family. They'll just match you up any old way.
CRYSTAL: He's reliable.
BONE: Yeah. And nice. And good for 40 years of marriage in a trailer park. Good luck with that.
CRYSTAL: That's mean, Bone. I'm going to get you--
BONE: Hee hee.
CRYSTAL: Hey. Come back. Don't go invisible when I'm trying to strangle you...
BONE: Hee hee.
Halloween. Candy corn never tasted so strange and sweet.

I thought you were saving yourself for Ned Beatty? And look at you getting all starry eyed of the current hunks o' the day... SHOCKING! Especially since everyone knows you are hoping to co-star with Beatty in "Deliverance 2: Ned Beatty's Revenge" and be the hillbilly he "deflowers" in the revenge rape scene!
Ned's BACK! It's 40 years later...and his butt is still sore! (Cue the banjos...)
Blah blah blah! It's 12:31 am and I NEED to get to bed (but if it's 12:31 a.m....that MUST mean that... I FINALLY have the internet up and running at home! Yahoooo!).
Sweet nightmares, Daddy-O!
CHEERS!
Looks and sounds interesting.
I liked the sample of "October Girls", but at the moment I am too broke to buy even an ebook. :(

I'd love to buy this for my daughter, but all they have on Amazon right now is the Kindle version...guess I'd better try to win a Kindle, then! :P

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and after my wife read the first chapter online, she decided it would be the first e-book she would buy for her brand new Kindle. We bought it last night and she is now reading it. :)

Hmm. Is there much symbolism in this book? varbonoff22 at cox dot net
Katie, there is a paper version but for some reason it's not linked to the Kindle product page (I think I haven't added "Scott Nicholson" to the paper version yet but search for October Girls and you can find it)
Neal, hope the wife enjoys it and thanks for proofing it.
Also, there will be a special pink cover for the Kindle version Oct 18-24, and all author proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. So if you buy it, tell a friend!

My daughter downloaded it right away, but is waiting for her birthday Kindle to read it. She doesn't like reading on her netbook. I may snag it as well.
lorraine_lanning[at]yahoo[dot]com
Great post, Scott.
caity_mack at yahoo dot com
I just read this earlier this week, cute story!
candace_redinger at yahoo dot com
Tiffany Christie, why did you name your son Orion? I like it! It's one of my favorite constellations! I named my dog Sirius (alpha Canis Major). My children would have killed me if I had named them "Andromeda", "Scorpio", and "Ursa Major." Scorpio would be a cool name, though. My wife fought against my wanting to call one of our twin sons Angus? Do you call your son Rion, or just O, perhaps? I could see that as appealing to a young fella.
Scott, I want to read all your books that I now own, and each time I read your description of a different book on this tour, it makes me want to skip to that one. So I have a bunch of partially started books resulting in one very confused reader. I like how the Kindle saves your place in what you are reading, but it does not help me get back into the story, so I usually have to go back and reread a bunch to get into the swing of things again. It's quite frustrating because I'm expected to do other things around here during my waking hours apart from reading. Commenting on blogs has carved out a good piece of my time as does reading other people's responses, looking at their profiles, looking around the host blogs, and then trying to correct my spelling in my comments, etc. I'm having fun, though, and always have to come up with, what I think are, credible excuses for not doing some particular thing I was supposed to do. Recently I'm spending a lot of my time, putting my library into groups and trying out some of the games (like SUDOKU)on my new Kindle 3! I love it! Still gets me into trouble. C'est la vie, No?
I agree with Crista, again, that the cover of October Girls is super! Who did the art? The cover has to say it all!
Thanks Larissa for hosting the tour today. I looked over your blog and want to return to go deeper soon.
Gotta go. Laundry's callin'.

Jeff I'm sorry (not) the Kindle 3 has added so much to your life. The cover art was by Ludeshka, an Argentina artist who did the cover and concepts for my Dreamboat graphic novel. She's very talented.
Regge, why don't you use "Scott Nicholson" as a pen name? Or at least have the checks made out to him...

He Scott,
I already got October Girls, although my daughter will probably have to get a little bit older before she can read it.
In fact it was so easy to get (for my Kindle for PC) that I went ahead and got Burial to Follow . . . then Murdermouth . . . then Haunted . . . then three of your short story collections before I screamed at myself to stop the madness!
So many stories and no Kindle (I had to return the borrowed Kindle) . . . but after I counted up all the money spent I realized to my great relief that I'd only spent one day's worth of lunch money.
--Whew--
Thanks for the chance to win,
