Those who know me, know that I love reading. However, starting almost an year ago, I started this reading frenzy that shows no signs of slowing down, let alone stopping.
The result of this frenzy so far is that right now I am following over 60 Book Series at the moment. These series find themselves mostly in the Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, basically any sort of supernatural, paranormal and preternatural genre out there.
Since I am reading and intend to read so many books from so many amazing authors, I decided to start reviewing Book Series and Novels.
Therefore, I present to you my book corner :)
"Using magic meant it used you back. Forget the fairy tale hocus-pocus, wave a wand and bling-o sparkles and pixie dust crap.
Magic, like booze, sex, and drugs, gave as good as it got."
Everything has a cost. And every act of magic exacts a price from its user--maybe a two-day migraine, or losing the memory of your first kiss. But some people want to use magic without paying, and they offload the cost onto an innocent. When that happens, it falls to a Hound to identify the spell's caster--and Allison Beckstrom's the best there is.
Daughter of a prominent Portland businessman, Allie would rather moonlight as a Hound than accept the family fortune--and the many strings that come with it. But when she discovers a little boy dying from a magical offload that has her father's signature all over it, Allie is thrown back into the high-stakes world of corporate espionage and black magic.
Now, Allie's out for the truth--and the forces she finds herself calling on will overturn everything she knows, change her in ways she could never imagine...and make her capable of things that powerful people will do anything to control.
(Magic to the Bone - From The Author's Website)
Allie Beckstrom's world is much like our own, with one basic/huge difference, magic has been "discovered" and is available for use by anyone. However, there is a price. Every time you use magic, you must pay it with pain. The bigger the spell, the bigger the payment, up to a point a person might "lose" memories, even of people they love.
Allie is a hound, she traces the origin of spells for hire. Her job takes a huge toll on her body and psyche and in this series we find ourselves immersed in her life, her world and a lot of times, her pain.
The "Magic Series" is extremely well written and Allie is a very likable character, who is in no way perfect and, like anyone else, is subject to making mistakes. However, the character does not stagnate and there is definitely growth on Allie's part. It is hard to live and know that you might be forgetting important things and your little notepad only comes so far. Her anguish in not remembering the man she might be in love with is heartbreaking and due to Monk's work, it is very easy to connect with Allie in a very personal level.
Devon Monk has brought to life an universe that is captivating and intense. She gives depth and color to her characters with mastery and it is impossible not to fall in love with this series.
If you are into this genre, or even if you are into urban adventure, I definitely recommend this series.
